Overview

Joby Aviation is seeking a passionate Senior or Staff level Mechanical Engineer to join our Powertrain and Electronics team in San Carlos, CA to support development of the Joby S4 Electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing vehicle. This individual will be responsible for designing hardware for various systems that power and control the aircraft. This position requires a relentless drive for engineering excellence and the ability to balance complex competing objectives and priorities.  The position will work cross-functionally and be responsible for the entire development cycle from early architecture through production. 

Responsibilities Design components, subassemblies, and systemsPerform analysis (models/simulation) to support design decisionsPlan/execute development tests to support design decisionsWork with external vendors and internal manufacturing/fabrication teams to build hardwareWork with the testing team to support verification testing of hardwareSolve complex multi-physics engineering problemsMentor junior engineersLead informal cross-functional teams/efforts Required B.S. or higher in mechanical engineering8+ years of demonstrated engineering experience - preferably “full-stack” with exposure to test, design, equipment/component selection, hands-on builds, bring-up and troubleshootingProficiency with professional 3D modeling software, preferably with Catia 3D Experience Proficiency in mechanical design, materials selection, kinematics, troubleshooting, and analysisExcellent problem solving and communication skillsStrong analytical background – able to use first principles to drive/inform design Desired M.S. in mechanical engineering8+ years of Aviation or Automotive industry experienceExperience with finite element simulation toolsExperience with electric powertrains or other electromechanical systems (power electronics, battery systems, motors/actuators)Strong fundamentals in fluid flow, thermals, structuresExperience with instrumentation selection/procurement and data acquisitionElectrical enclosure design experienceExperience taking design(s) through production EEO

Compensation at Joby is a combination of base pay and Restricted Stock Units (RSUs). The target base pay for this position is $123,400 - $201,500/yr. The compensation package will be determined by job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
