Senior Staff Accountant

 Grant Thornton is seeking a Senior Staff Accountant to join the team in Downers Grove, IL.

Position Summary:

The senior accountants in the department are responsible for supervising and developing staff accountants and reviewing related work product including certain detail work necessary to maintain the accounting records for the firm.  In addition, senior accountants are responsible producing certain monthly and ad hoc financial reports, providing informative financial analysis, and providing overall support to management in the facilitation of projects.  This position at times includes the testing and implementation of updated / new financial reports and software.  This position provides opportunity for cross functional teaming opportunities with other internal Grant Thornton groups, as well as exposure and visibility within Grant Thornton.  This position has direct reporting responsibility to the Accounting Managers within the Accounting department.

Essential duties and responsibilities:

Supervise the preparation of and/or prepare timely and accurate journal entries, financial statements, supporting schedules and ad hoc reports. Supervise the preparation of and/or prepare analysis and reconciliation of key accounts to assess accuracy, completeness, and need for adjustment. Takes responsibility for project load, while being able to appropriately communicate with Accounting leadership to ensure agreement on direction of the project, status, issues and issue resolution. Train and develop staff accountants, including review of all staff accountant work product and timely feedback on results of this review; in addition, participate in the formal evaluation process of the staff. Application of U.S. GAAP knowledge to ensure the proper recording of financial transactions. Create/enhance project structure including planning project timelines and development of written procedures and improvements to project documentation.  Streamline project processes to improve efficiency, eliminate redundancy, and take advantage of technology, without compromising the integrity of the work. Problem-solve accounting issues.  Summarize problem, research results, and recommend course of action. Interact with key personnel throughout the firm on cross-functional initiatives and issues, in a customer service capacity, and/or to obtain information to complete responsibilities.  Reports updates, systems testing for accounting systems. Special projects as needed. Attend professional development and training sessions as necessary. Perform other job-related duties as necessary.

Key Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA preferred. Must have at least 4 years or more of progressive Accounting or Finance experience in a medium- to large-sized partnership or corporate accounting environment, prior experience in the professional services industry a plus. Must have at least 2 years of successful supervisory experience. Outstanding organizational and time management skills, able to prioritize multiple assignments. Excellent communication skills including verbal, written, and presentation skills. Very adept at using Microsoft Office Suite software programs (Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Access) and adept at learning new software programs. Able to work both independently and as a member of a team. Results-oriented; takes initiative. Strong attention to detail. Willing to work additional hours when needed, and flexibility related to time zone differences in teaming with India. Hybrid work schedule with certain in-office days, with added in-office days for fiscal year end, or as otherwise needed.
