Senior Research Engineer, On-Device Personal Intelligence

Summary:  Samsung AI Research Center (AIC) located in Mountain View, California, is currently recruiting outstanding scientists for the Language Intelligence lab. Our goal is to perform research and development with direct impact on future Samsung products reaching hundreds of millions of users worldwide. We are focused on pushing the state-of-the-art and practice in natural language and knowledge intelligence. 

Position Summary: As a Research Engineer, you will be at the forefront of creating state-of-the-art personalization features and on-device solutions using Large Language Models (LLMs). You will contribute to the development of novel AI-driven technologies that enhance user experiences, focusing on improving device personalization in areas such as smartphones, wearables, and other smart devices. Your work will help build systems that adapt intelligently to users’ needs while maintaining privacy, efficiency, and usability. 

Position Responsibilities: 

Conduct groundbreaking research in personalization and on-device AI solutions using LLMs, specifically for mobile and embedded devices  Develop new approaches for incorporating LLMs into personalized recommendations, Q&A, context-aware features, and proactive assistance, ensuring they respond contextually to users' behaviors, preferences, and habits  Design, prototype, and implement LLM-based models to deliver a personalized, adaptive experience across a variety of user interactions  Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate AI models into end-user applications and optimize performance for real-time, on-device use cases  Focus on improving device efficiency, privacy, and security while utilizing state-of-the-art AI techniques, ensuring a seamless user experience  Stay up-to-date with the latest AI and LLM research trends, leveraging these insights to continuously improve and innovate the product experience  Contribute to the publication of research findings in top conferences and journals, as well as present insights to internal teams and stakeholders 

Required Skills: 

Ph.D. in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, or a related field or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience  1+ years of research experience in the fields of AI/NLP/ML  Strong background in NLP, LLMs, and deep learning techniques  Hands-on experience with LLMs such as GPT, BERT, T5, or similar, and knowledge of their application in real-world environments  Experience in knowledge graph construction, indexing (e.g., vector DB) and Retrieval Sugmented Generation (RAG) models  Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, TensorFlow, PyTorch, and other ML frameworks  Experience designing and deploying AI models on mobile, embedded, or resource-constrained devices  Strong understanding of AI model optimization techniques, including model compression, quantization, and efficient computation for on-device use  Experience in user-centric research and product design, with a focus on improving personalization and user experience  Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to present complex technical concepts to a broad audience  Our total rewards programs are designed to motivate and engage exceptional talent. The base pay range for roles at this level is listed below, but may be higher or lower in other states due to geographic differentials in the labor market. Within the base pay range, individual rates depend on a number of factors—including the role’s function and location as well as the individual’s knowledge, skills, experience, education and training. This is part of our comprehensive compensation package with annual bonus eligibility and generous benefits to help you live life well.Base Pay Range$151,200—$207,750 USD
