Senior Principal Optical Engineer
The Integrated Solution Business (ISB) Group of MKS Instruments is growing very rapidly with significant strategic investments in the development and fabrication of cutting-edge, high precision optics and opto-mechanical assemblies deployed into high-volume manufacturing and life-science applications. To manufacture these products, ISB is seeking individuals like you to join our team as a Senior Principal Optical Engineer. In this position, you will provide technical leadership in the design and development of complex optical systems by coordinating cross-functional development activities. What you will do is: + Interpret requirements with customer's inputs and translate system or subsystem requirements into optical design and manufacturing requirements + Conduct optical system modeling and tolerancing analysis with full consideration of alignment process, metrology, system calibrations, opto-mechanical design limitations and manufacturability + Investigate various design and testing options accounting for cost, manufacturability, performance, quality, reliability, and schedule. Provide leadership with well-structured technical recommendations to support the decision process + Lead and participate in feasibility studies, product development, and sustaining activities with cross-functional teams + Follow the design process, including design reviews, part procurement from vendors, testing, integration, and release + Design and implement optical alignment, metrology processes and test/tooling fixtures to achieve targeted optical performance + Develop and execute product verification tests. Troubleshoot subsystems and final systems What you will bring to the team is: + Master’s degree in optical engineering, physics, or equivalent with 10+ years of experience + A good grounding in optics principles and opto-mechanical design is required, and knowledge of lasers is an advantage. + Lens design and optical analysis skills are prerequisites, as well as knowledge of the practical aspects of system alignment, integration, and testing. + A deep understanding of state-of-the-art manufacturing processes and metrology and how to incorporate this into your optical designs + Experience in developing and implementing test procedures and evaluating and selecting appropriate test instrumentation + Hands-on experience in assembling, aligning, and testing optical systems We are interested in a qualified candidate who is eligible to work in the United States. However, we will not be sponsoring work visas for this position, at this time. Compensation and Benefits:Salary Pay Range: $139,200 to $258,600 per year. This range is a good faith estimate of the expected salary range for this position, based on a wide range of factors including qualifications, experience and training, operational and business needs and other considerations permitted by law.  At MKS, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for the role. Bonus: This position is eligible for a discretionary annual bonus, in an amount to be determined by MKS [or as applicable].
