Senior Microwave & Linac Scientist

We are looking for an experienced microwave and linear accelerator (Linac) engineer with deep expertise in all elements of the RF chain for powering electron Linacs.  The candidate should have deep familiarity with linear accelerators and key elements of the RF chain, such as magnetrons, klystrons and circulators.  In addition, the candidate should be proficient in the use of relevant diagnostic techniques and equipment, such as network analyzers and power meters, for example, and be proficient at commercial microwave and electromagnetic beam transport simulation software, such as CST. 

We are looking for a team player who combines a solid technical background with a practical mindset and hands-on aptitude.  Ability to collaborate effectively in a multi-disciplinary team is essential, as are strong troubleshooting skills and the ability to efficiently manage project timelines in a fast-paced environment.  This role is on-site in Palo Alto, CA and requires the successful candidate to reside near the Palo Alto area.

Responsibilities will include

Linac & Microwave system design work and data collection.Work with other scientists and engineers to review and solve difficult technical issues.Serve as a technical expert on Linac & microwave projects and as a resource to other related projects at Varian.Provide support and expertise to Manufacturing and Field Service Engineering groups.Coordinate resources needed to complete a task or project.Improve documentation, baseline data and operating and maintenance procedures.Provide scope, cost and schedule estimates for research and engineering projects.Willing to support this role 100% in Palo Alto, California

Job Requirements

MS/Ph.D. in Microwave Engineering or similar field10+ years of relevant experience in the design, construction, implementation and maintenance of Linacs and high power microwave systemsExperience operating relevant lab equipmentHighly motivated team player who can also work independentlyExcellent problem solving and critical thinking skillsAbility to interact effectively with experts in multiple disciplines.

The base pay range for this position is

Min $140,400 - Max $252,800

The pay wage range shown is based on the job posting's primary location. Actual compensation packages are based on a wide array of factors, including but not limited to skill set, experience, certifications, and location.
