Senior Licensing Manager for Special Projects

Dean of Research / Office of Technology Licensing: The Office of Technology Licensing (OTL) was established in 1970 to manage the intellectual property assets of Stanford University. OTL evaluates, markets, and licenses technology owned by the University. OTL's mission is to encourage effective technology transfer for the public benefit as well as generating royalty income for Stanford to benefit research and education. OTL is one of the country's most active offices in the field of technology transfer from the university to industry. Our staff, most of whom are professionals engaged directly in licensing, manages over 3,000 active dockets.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Office of Technology licensing is seeking a dynamic and experienced Technology Licensing Manager to join our team. The ideal candidate will have an ability to evaluate, analyze, and strategically manage complex invention disclosures and license negotiations with the potential for significant licensing revenue. The candidate will further facilitate establishment and maintenance of agreements with research sponsorship with both for-profit and non-profit entities. With a focus on driving innovation and commercialization, the Senior Licensing Manager for Special Projects will play a pivotal role in leading or partnering with other professionals to negotiate and manage complex agreements.  As a seasoned, experienced business development and licensing professional, this candidate is expected to have a full understanding of organization policies and procedures to resolve a wide range of issues to foster collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders. The candidate will also be involved in traditional technology transfer-related activities by managing inventions including developing licensing opportunities and strategies, negotiating the terms and conditions of agreements and administering patent-related activities. This position requires significant knowledge of negotiation strategies, technology market assessment, intellectual property protection and licensing, managing disputes and litigation related matters as well as thorough knowledge of contracts and grants. Specific job responsibilities include serving as a senior mentor to junior licensing managers, providing guidance on complex negotiations and agreements. Responsibilities include evaluating high-value invention disclosures, developing patenting and commercialization strategies, negotiating and closing licensing deals, and ensuring compliance with license agreement terms, including terminations if necessary. The position also involves resolving complex licensing disputes, coordinating litigation as needed, and collaborating with the Strategic Alliance team to manage research collaborations. Additional duties include overseeing a contracts clause library, managing revenue-sharing with third parties, ensuring contractual compliance, and fostering strong sponsor relationships.

 

This position is to be based at the Stanford work location with an option of a hybrid work arrangement, subject to operational need. Hybrid work arrangements require a regular presence at the Stanford work location that is determined based on business needs, and is typically two, three, or four days per week or an equivalent amount of time monthly.

 CORE DUTIES:

Evaluate and analyze complex new invention disclosures, where agreements tend to be licensing potential in the millions of dollars, including initial review, meeting with inventor(s), identifying industry reviewers, making contact, and sending material. Follow-up, collect and evaluate information, make decisions that have significant impact, and provide necessary notifications. Develop licensing strategy for significant cases, identifying potential licensees, negotiating terms, preparing draft agreements, and closing the deal. Manage patent-related activities including selection of attorney, determination of when and where to file patent applications, and management of an inventory of unlicensed cases from a financial perspective. Monitor license agreements, ensure compliance with diligence terms, prepare and execute amendments, process terminations, and participate in decisions on whether to pursue litigation. Maintain and develop relations with licensees; monitor progress in licensed product(s) development.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Experience:

Bachelor's degree in a scientific or engineering discipline and at least ten years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

In-depth understanding and expertise in drafting and negotiation of licensing transactions, and technology transfer processes, including proven ability to independently develop and implement complex contracting strategies. Advanced knowledge of legal aspects and University policies related to intellectual property, contracts, and licensing agreements, Strong negotiation and communication skills to navigate complex technology transfer scenarios with a demonstrated ability to creatively solve problems and resolve conflicts. Ability to multi-task and manage deadlines with attention to detail and accuracy. Excellent interpersonal, oral, written and presentation skills. Demonstrated customer relationship skills, and the ability to influence and negotiate with internal constituencies and external business partners. Demonstrated ability to take ownership and leadership of projects from inception to completion, including developing strategy, implementation and execution of tasks. Strong knowledge of industry standards, trends and/or regulatory requirements. Strong organizational and computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite and ability to learn applicable business-related systems.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

Frequently perform desk based computer tasks, seated work and use light/ fine grasping. Occasionally use a telephone, stand, walk, twist, bend, stoop, squat, write by hand, sort, and file paperwork or parts. Rarely lift, carry, push, and pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.

For On-site or Hybrid positions:

The expected pay range for this position is $162,715 to 194,000 per annum.
