Senior Environmental Engineer

For this position to be successful, the incumbent should have:

A Bachelor’s degree in environmental studies or a related field from an accredited institution.Minimum 7 years of professional environmental experience. Minimum 2 years of experience supervising/managing others. This position is subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR), which requires U.S. person status. ITAR defines U.S. person as an U.S. Citizen, U.S. Permanent Resident (i.e. ‘Green Card Holder’), Political Asylee, or Refugee. 

 

Preferred Qualifications

A Master’s degree in an EHS related field from an accredited institution.EHS related accreditations, such as CSP, CIH, and/or CHMM. Demonstrated experience in the application of EHS management systems.Direct experience in developing and implementing environmental stewardship and waste minimization programs. Direct experience working with environmental data systems.

 

Working Conditions

This position involves moderate exposure to risk of accident and requires following basic safety precautions. Work is performed in a shared work environment divided between the outdoors, the shop floor, and in an interior office space. Possible exposure to hazardous materials in this position requires wearing full PPE, at times, to protect from such chemicals. 

This position requires moderate physical activity, such as walking, standing, and sitting for extended periods of time, as well as kneeling, bending, twisting, reaching, climbing ladders, and some lifting. 

This position also requires a willingness to maintain a flexible work schedule. Additionally, it requires that the incumbent retains active membership and engages in regular training as part of the Emergency Response team. 

Under the direction of the EHS Manager, this position is responsible for determining, planning, coordinating, scheduling, and directing environmental and health/safety activities to ensure regulatory compliance, implement the EHS management system, and protect human health and the environment. Direct reports include a group of hourly personnel assigned to the incumbent’s area and shift. The incumbent communicates continually with all levels of management across all departments at Cleveland Operations. Externally, they communicate with federal, state, and local government regulatory agencies. 

 

Accountability Objectives

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Providing specialized technical expertise in program areas involving chemical release, storm water and industrial wastewater management, wastewater projects, waste disposal, proper characterization, recycling efforts, and air permitting and compliance.Preparing federal, state, and local permit applications and overseeing related programs. Developing, proposing, and conducting environmental tests on air (ambient and process), water (drinking, storm, and waste), and solid wastes. Evaluating and acting upon those results. Determining, analyzing, recording, and reporting source and effluent emissions for air, wastewater and waste streams to help establish, recommend, and optimize the plant’s environmental system operating trends. Managing and supporting Title V reporting/permit renewal and ensuring that those related requirements are completed. This includes managing and overseeing the plant’s Ozone Depleting Substance compliance. Streamlining reporting requirements for each function while reducing costs and ensuring compliance.Providing the Environmental and Engineering Department staff and other personnel involved in environmental related activities with technical direction, counseling, and training. Producing documentation, as necessary. Participating in the development and planning of long-range facility capital expenditures and cost savings programs, in addition to developing and managing capital and expense budgets for respective areas. Providing specialized technical expertise, direction, and guidance to help make decisions regarding changes in engineering standards, equipment, processes, and policies and procedures. Supervising the activities of any direct reports, contractors, and consultants involved in related environmental programs, field sampling, and emissions testing for the site. Participating in activities related to the ISO 14001 Certification Program while maintaining Customer and Corporate requirements. Maintaining awareness and communicating emerging and existing environmental processes, laws, and regulations that may impact plant operations. Defining, developing, and maintaining appropriate studies, programs, and databases to provide management with pertinent knowledge of environmental impacts and the basis for preventative and/or corrective actions. Representing the plant on environmental matters to local, state, and federal legislative and regulatory agencies, as requestedManaging site-wide remediation efforts.Maintaining the Environmental Department budget to ensure costs are effectively controlled and managed. Performing other duties as assigned.
