Pay Range

$202,500 - $256,824 Annually

This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting; pay will not be below any applicable local minimum wage.  An employee’s position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, specific competencies, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, geographic location, performance, and business or organizational needs.

Job Description

The Center for Global Security Research (CGSR) has an immediate need for a Senior Deterrence Analyst.  CGSR deterrence analysts conduct research and analysis on a wide range of topics related to the Laboratory’s nuclear mission, including deterrence, assurance, strategic stability, and risk reduction.  CGSR is a part of the laboratory Director’s Office and as such supports strategic planning and strategy development for the lab and its sponsors.

In this role you will 

Conduct in-depth research and analysis on highly complex 21st century deterrence challenges including but not limited to challenges related to US nuclear relationships with nuclear-armed rivals (both major powers and regional challengers), regional deterrence architectures, extended deterrence, tailored deterrence, and intra-war deterrence.Conduct in-depth research and analysis on highly complex risk reduction strategies including but not limited to arms control, nonproliferation, strategic stability, and unilateral restraint.Depending on the project, build multidisciplinary teams with internal and external subject matter experts to design and execute projects and tasks.Generate single-authored papers, multi-authored papers, study group reports, and other analytical products, including both formal and informal presentations.Contribute to the Center’s larger agenda by participating in the design of the research program, by actively engaging in center-organized events, by providing substantive feedback on the work of others, and by mentoring less-experienced staff.Participate in the work of other organizations on related topics to the extent time and circumstances permit.Represent CGSR and the lab by contributing expertise to projects elsewhere in the lab, at other national security laboratories, at NNSA and DOE, and elsewhere as required.Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q/SCI-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.Master’s degree in international relations or national security studies, or a closely related field or equivalent combination of education and experienceFive (5) years of experience providing analytical support to the Department of Defense or other relevant U.S. government organization on nuclear issuesSubstantial experience in the process of making and implementing deterrence policyExpertise working with US allies on deterrence and nuclear issuesA track record of significant publications on deterrence and nuclear issuesExpert knowledge of deterrence policy challenges in both Europe and the Indo-PacificSubject matter expertise in current arms control, non-proliferation, and risk reduction challenges both bilateral and multilateralSubstantial experience working with classified information on deterrence-related issuesExpertise in working with the interagency community and with the scientific and technical communitiesExperience building multidisciplinary teams to design and execute projects and tasks.Highly advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and to clearly and concisely convey highly complex analyses to advise decision-makers Additional Information

Security Clearance

This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.  Also, you must have the ability to obtain and maintain Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) access.  If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. Also, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. 

Pre-Employment Drug Test

External applicant(s) selected for this position must pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Per the Department of Energy (DOE), Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory must meet certain restrictions with the use and/or possession of mobile devices in Limited Areas. Depending on your job duties, you may be required to work in a Limited Area where you are not permitted to have a personal and/or laboratory mobile device in your possession.  This includes, but not limited to cell phones, tablets, fitness devices, wireless headphones, and other Bluetooth/wireless enabled devices.  

If you use a medical device, which pairs with a mobile device, you must still follow the rules concerning the mobile device in individual sections within Limited Areas.  Sensitive Compartmented Information Facilities require separate approval. Hearing aids without wireless capabilities or wireless that has been disabled are allowed in Limited Areas, Secure Space and Transit/Buffer Space within buildings.
