Senior Counsel

The selected candidate will have responsibility for legal support for one or more business or functional units of a $22+ billion, global, publicly-traded company on a broad range of corporate legal matters, serving not only as the legal point of contact advising the business units on day-to-day matters but also as a strategic counselor and advisor to management on building and implementing scalable, practical policies and programs that balance legal risk with business impact.  The selected candidate will also be responsible for representing the organization and handling various legal matters, including complex matters, and leading projects and negotiations with specialized knowledge in one or more legal practice areas. The selected candidate may also lead practice group(s) or cross functional teams on a wide range of legal and compliance matters, and may manage others in the legal department. Position based in Pittsburgh, PA or Chicago, IL.

 

Responsibilities:

Serves as a strategic counselor and advisor to business units on building and implementing scalable policies and programs that balance legal risk with business impact.  Leads project teams and cross functional teams on a wide range of business, legal and compliance matters.  May manage others in the legal department (e.g., counsel and/or paralegals) or practice groups.  Manages legal budget within their area of responsibility and ensure alignment with financial targets.  Negotiates, drafts, and reviews legal documents and agreements to accomplish business objectives and serves as a legal advocate for the company with external constituents.  Researches legal principles and precedents, gathers relevant case related information using multiple sources and methods, and provides practical and actionable advice to the business on legal matters, including developments and changes in laws and regulations, and develops policies and ensures compliance in those areas. Responsible for handling and leading a variety of legal matters, including complex legal matters and projects requiring specialized commercial knowledge.    Creates, conducts and implements training modules on a variety of business law or compliance topics.  Collaborates with business leaders and cross-functional teams to effectively mitigate commercial risks and support corporate strategies and business objectives.  Expertise in relevant legal practice areas and provides counsel related to those areas to business clients.  Provides practical and actionable advice to management on legal matters, including developments and changes in laws and regulations, and develops policies and ensures compliance in those areas.  Works closely with, and oversees outside counsel and in-house paralegals or other team members on commercial or compliance work to ensure effective, business-focused commercial law support and advice is provided to clients. 

 

Qualifications:

J.D. required. PA, IL or other jurisdiction appropriate bar license required.  Excellent academic credentials required.  Significant experience practicing law on complex legal matters, including experience at a top tier law firm or in-house position (8 years required, 10+ years preferred). Responsible, accountable, client-focused person who represents the department well (e.g., practical, responsive, knowledgeable, professional, timely), integrates well into the larger organization, and inspires trust, forges relationships quickly at all levels of the organization, and earns the confidence and cooperation of business partners.   Entrepreneurial mindset who takes active ownership of areas of responsibility and handles multiple priorities within deadlines and with minimal direct supervision.   Adept at conducting complex risk assessments and developing practical solutions.   Exceptional problem solving, oral and written communication, negotiation, advisory and advocacy skills; a strategic and critical thinker who exhibits strong levels of insight and intellectual curiosity and is able to creatively problem solve with a customer focus and “can do” attitude.  Ability to go deep into a specific problem, build solutions and measure results.  Innovative, with the ability to assess and deploy process changes, efficiencies and other measures that reduce time, add value or mitigate risk.   Meticulous level of attention to detail.  Commitment to expand knowledge and adapt to a changing and fast-paced environment.  Able to recognize and act on evolving legal trends impacting the business.  Leadership and effectiveness when dealing with stakeholders, and cross-functional teams.  Ability to handle difficult issues in a professional, assertive and proactive manner.  Excellent legal research skills.  Technologically proficient in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.  Highs standards, impeccable integrity and ethics, unquestionable good judgment.  Potential Travel - 10%.
