Senior Civil Engineer-Multidiscipline Leader

Your Opportunity 

The role of Senior Civil Engineer is to work collaboratively as a team member to support and drive a wide range of multi-disciplinary projects ranging from community development to municipal water and wastewater utilities to federal and military infrastructure.  We are seeking a hands-on leader and engineering practitioner with broad experience in both engineering design and project management, specifically in the field of civil engineering. This position requires the ability to handle significant projects, coordinate client and government agency interaction, and lead and work effectively in a multi-discipline, integrated team environment with other engineers, architects and contractors. 

This position requires technical design and design management for all aspects of multi-disciplinary engineering projects, including investigations, conceptual development, preparation of project drawings, details, specifications, estimates, and permits, within budget and on time, in accordance with current engineering knowledge and practice.  As a leader and project manager, you will supervise other staff, lead design teams, and interface with clients on diverse projects ranging from site development, schools and health clinics, water and wastewater utilities, water resources, and military infrastructure, including USACE and NAVFAC defense initiatives.  

The Alaska Civil Engineering Team works throughout Alaska, the western US, and the entirety of the Pacific.  In recent years, beyond our work in Alaska, projects have included water systems for the AirForce in Idaho, major utility projects in Hawaii, navy projects in Guam and Micronesia, and water systems in Mongolia.

The right candidate may be offered a leadership role in the management and supervision of the Alaska Civil Engineering Team.

Your Key Responsibilities
Develop design and construction documents for site development, public works, utility, or water resources related projects. 
Perform work involving the application of all aspects of civil and / or environmental engineering, including conveyance design and water and wastewater treatment.
Design all manners of military infrastructure projects ranging from housing to utilities to airfields to marine facilities for DoD, USACE, and NAVFAC clients.
Develop and direct design and preparation of technical reports, calculations, project drawings, details, and specifications.
Exercise judgment in the independent evaluation, selection, and substantial adaptation and modification of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria.  
Apply diversified knowledge of engineering principles and practices, including advanced techniques, theory, precepts, and practices in the civil engineering field and related sciences and disciplines.
Interface with, support, and direct multi-discipline architectural / engineering teams including structural, mechanical, electrical, controls, and fire protection engineering.  Assist with integration of the various disciplines into complete, well-coordinated construction documents.
Coordinate with regulatory agencies and serve as a liaison between clients and agencies, subcontractors, and design teams.
Manage project staff, scope, budget, schedule, and client expectations in accordance with sound management practices, and Stantec’s management Framework.   
Provide customer support and clientship.
Provide quality control and independent/peer review of deliverables. 
Assist with the implementation of Stantec’s Health and Safety Program.
Instruct, mentor, and assist junior staff in their career development.
Market the firm’s engineering and multi-discipline capabilities to establish new clients and enhance relationships with existing clients.
Prepare statements of qualification and proposal responses for potential projects.
Develop scope of work and negotiate fees and contract terms for project work.
Assist in the development of new standards and specifications for the civil group.

Comprehensive knowledge of site development, site grading, and water and wastewater utility design, including pumping systems and conveyance. 
Experience with directing integrated, multi-discipline design teams, especially structural, mechanical, controls and electrical systems a plus.
Requisite knowledge and application of applicable design standards and codes.
Prior experience with US Federal agency engineering and construction projects (NAVFAC, USACE, AFCEC, etc.), to include ProjNet and UFC GuideSpecs highly desirable.
Solid understanding of all phases of project document production and the relationship between drawings and specifications.
Strong knowledge of civil construction means and methods, materials, construction practices, and industry standards.
Ability to effectively discuss project issues with clients, reviewing agencies, and regulators.
Possesses excellent time-management skills. 
Thorough understanding of task assignment and schedule, budgeting, and efficient use of time and resources.
Ability to check the work of others for accuracy and completeness and manage time to meet project budget and schedule.
Ability to participate and collaborate in project team setting and to engage in creative and critical thought. Thorough understanding of civil engineering concepts and ability to effectively communicate ideas to others.
Advanced oral and written communication skills.
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and AutoCAD Civil 3D.    Experience with REVIT, GIS, HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, AFT Fathom is desirable. 
Possess a valid driver’s license and good driving record. 
Ability to travel as required, including rural Alaska.  Estimated travel:  5-10%

Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Civil Engineering or in Mechanical Engineering with suitable experience.
Licensed Professional Civil Engineer (Alaska).   Other licenses may be considered depending on experience.
Minimum of 10-12 years of experience of Civil Engineering.
Experience in multi-discipline design, process mechanical and controls systems, including water and wastewater treatment and pumping is desirable.
Experience in construction, construction contract administration, and design-build projects is desirable.

This position has flexible working arrangements for the right candidate that may include the option of remote, hybrid or in office options, however, there will be requirements for in-person collaboration with your team members on a weekly basis.

Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
