Position Summary:


We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Senior Bioinformatics Programmer. In this role, the Senior Bioinformatics Programmer is a member of the Center for Molecular Oncology and part of the group responsible for providing bioinformatics support to Center for Molecular Oncology. Responsibilities include the design, development and execution of bioinformatics pipelines, developing interactive databases of molecular tumor data, and presentation of the results to the Director of the Center of Molecular Oncology, and his team.

Job Responsibilities:

Professional development: Attends seminars, lectures and training courses to learn new computational biology skills and to remain up to date with the cancer genomics field. Learns new programming languages or techniques as necessary, as well as new data analysis software.

Systems support: Provides systems support for the Center for Molecular Oncology Performs first level troubleshooting of database and software-related problems, including contacting the Help Desk, software vendors, etc. for more complex issues.

Support/consulting/: Works with the team to explain the services offered. Reviews the data with the team and explains the background and the analysis process. Performs custom analysis tailored to the users specific needs.

Information management: In collaboration with members of the Applied Bioinformatics Laboratories and MCIT, participates in the establishment, management, and maintenance of relational databases for projects, sequencing quality data, biological samples, primers, mutations, and others. Operates, updates and maintains a web-based front end for easy access and retrieval of stored data by users.

Data analysis: Performs different types of data analysis relating to the genomics-based approaches utilized by the center in an independent fashion. Works directly or indirectly with lab users to analyze biomedical data and address scientific problems with bioinformatics techniques and tools. Generates and retrieves primers based on specific project requirements. Performs quality analysis of the generated sequencing data and develops solutions for enhancing future performance. Runs and troubleshoots the pipeline for mutation detection and genomic consequence calculation. Presents and summarizes results of the analyses to the team members.

Minimum Qualifications:
To qualify you must have a Bachelors degree in Bioinformatics, System Biology, Computer Science or related field.
Knowledge of biology and understanding of key and complex biological concepts (genes, pathways, cancer and/or stem cells).
Ability to work independently while collaborating and assisting the team in its common research goals.
Attention to detail and ability to work on multiple projects is necessary.
Excellent communication skills with proficiency in written and oral English.

Preferred Qualifications:
3+ years of experience with sequencing data (two of DNA-seq, RNA-seq and ChIP-seq).
3+ years of experience creating customized sequencing analysis pipelines.
Experience in Unix/Linux systems including HPC environments.
Scripting languages: Python (preferred) or Perl.
Statistical packages: R (preferred) or Matlab.

NYU Langone Health provides a salary range to comply with the New York state Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $81,325.15 - $90,483.05 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
