Job Summary

The Director of College Care and Support reports to the Deputy Dean of Students and Associate Dean of the College for Student Experience and is part of the senior leadership team of the Dean of Students Office (DOS). The Director oversees the College Care and Support Team which includes hospitalization and students of concern, leaves and returns, and persistence and retention. The Director assists the Deputy Dean of Students and Associate Dean of the College for Student Experience in crafting the vision and leading the direction for student support in the Office of the Dean of Students in the College and works closely with the directors of offices and centers within the Dean of Students Office. The Director’s team has a particular emphasis on student success, support, and overall experience. The Director assesses complex student issues (personal, academic, financial) and designs and implements interventions as appropriate.

The Care and Support Team is dedicated to fostering a compassionate, inclusive, and resilient academic community for our College students. The Team provides comprehensive support services that empower College students to navigate personal and academic challenges. The mission is to promote academic success and personal growth by offering tailored resources, interventions, and a supportive network. Through collaboration with campus partners, we aim to create a nurturing environment in which every student feels valued, supported, and equipped to thrive.

Responsibilities

Provides leadership for a broad range of services and programs to enrich the overall student experience and to assist and support students across the University with their academic, career, and personal development.Manages a team of four (two assistant directors; a coordinator; and an assistant dean of students) and ensures timely care for students managing complex situations.Coordinates campus care for students including partnering with academic units, Student Wellness, Housing and Residence Life and other University offices to provide holistic support for students in crisis.Oversees retention and persistence efforts, transitions to and from the University and provides strategic leadership for ensuring proactive interventions including holds, probation status, leaves and returns, and graduation.Implements best practices and stays informed on behavioral interventions and case management.Manages a case load of individual students.Supports DOS staff who oversee student discipline, emergency response, and work with students in crisis.Assists office leadership in providing direction to College community in the event of a student emergency or death or other significant student crisis, working with key staff in Campus and Student Life, the University of Chicago Police Department, College Communications, families, faculty, staff, as well as student communities.In conjunction with College Communications team, coordinates College response to major crises and other significant events impacting students within the College community.Oversees communication plan for student outreach.Manages College projects and initiatives, in-whole, in-part, and in collaboration with, partner offices relating to student support and persistence.Collaborates as needed with partner offices and College Communications teams.Manages the execution of the school's registration, enrollment, grading, and graduation procedures. Creates plans to coordinate student affairs activities between students and faculty.Manages a team of individuals that validate the academic status of students within the school to ensure proper tuition assessments and scholarship awards.Performs other related work as needed.


Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.


Work Experience:

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 7+ years of work experience in a related job discipline.

Preferred Qualifications

Education:

Master’s degree; professional degree or doctorate.

Experience:

Minimally 5 years administrative experience in higher education, with increasing responsibilities.Familiarity with University structure and functions of its various offices and departments.Familiarity with University systems, human resources, and budgets.Background communicating with students, parents, University faculty and staff, and managing communication programs.

Technical Skills or Knowledge: 

Proficiency in Mac and PC environments.Proficiency in Word, Excel, Outlook, and online organizational tools.Familiarity with Adobe graphic design/web development environments.Proficiency with web and social media platforms.Learn new software and database tools as needed.Strong verbal and written communication skills including excellent editing/proofreading in English.Excellent computer skills and use complex databases and other record-keeping systems.
