The Alaka`ina Foundation Family of Companies (FOCs) has a need for a Scientist to support our government customer located in San Antonio.

DESCRIPTION OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

Plan and execute laboratory research in reference to established project management plan while adhering to all applicable DoD, Defense Health Agency (DHA), USAISR, state, and local laws, policies, procedures, and instructions. Assist technical and administrative staff with daily operations by providing requested information and providing status updates on scheduled protocols.  Review scientific documentation and literature to stay abreast of current state of the science and new and emerging technologies. Perform data collection/management/analysis and assist with all publication submissions.  Maintain laboratory and all other safety-related documentation in accordance with OHSA and local policies and regulations. Such policies and regulations include all current federal and state regulatory laws, directives, licenses, and guidance governing occupational and environmental health.  Maintain chemical inventories on Excel sheet or other comparable documentation and/or software following established SOPs. (Deliverable #9)  Ensure chemicals are properly labeled in the laboratory and vivarium.  Maintain supply inventories on excel sheet or other comparable documentation and/or software following established SOPs. (Deliverable #10)  Maintain specimen/freezer inventories on excel sheet or other comparable documentation and/or software following established SOPs. (Deliverable #11)  Ensure supply/materials are stocked to the appropriate levels and documented.  Maintain equipment inventory on excel sheet or other comparable documentation and/or software following established SOPs. (Deliverable #12)  Create and maintain laboratory checklist for each laboratory space following established SOPs. (Deliverable #13)  Stay current and with federal and state laboratory requirements and laws and regulations.  Inspect laboratory notebooks to ensure good documentation practices and report any negative findings to the COR and Program Manager IAW USAISR established SOPs. (Deliverable #14)  Maintain laboratory equipment & workspaces.  Ensure equipment used for the generation/measurement/assessment of data shall be adequately tested, calibrated, and/or standardized.  Maintain all workspaces in accordance with OSHA and local safety guidelines.  Coordinate with Biomedical Maintenance / Government personnel if any equipment should break or malfunction. Ensure that proper follow-up is conducted when reporting.  Coordinate with Facilities Management and Safety if any leaks, interior damage, or foul smells should occur.  Ensure that proper follow-up is conducted when reporting.  Report issues within the laboratory space to Government staff as soon as possible.   Report serious issues or dangerous situations to the COR or Operations and Finance Manager immediately.   Complete and maintain currency of the Temperature Sensitive Medical Products (TSMP) training.   Perform daily accountability of TSMP freezers by initialing completion on required documentation. (Deliverable #15)  Ensure liquid nitrogen tanks are full and available for use.  Notify laboratory manager if excess waste needs to be removed from the laboratory.  Coordinate with Safety to ensure waste chemical are properly removed and documented.  Relocate equipment/lab table/chairs when approved by COR or other Government staff.  Generate and track internal purchase requests for animals, supplies, equipment, and chemicals. (Deliverable #16)  Contractor shall process samples and run assays.  Perform microbiology assays to include but not limited to Minimum Biofilm Eradication Concentration (MBEC), Minimum Biofilm Inhibitory Concentration (MBIC), cellular characteristics, phage titer, biofilm antimicrobial susceptibility, biofilm inhibition and biofilm dispersion, colony forming unit enumeration.  Perform molecular assays to include but not limited to western blot, northern blot, southern blot, enzyme linked immunosorbent assay, magnetic bead multiplex.   Perform biochemical assays such as limited to real-time polymerase chain reaction, deoxyribonucleic and ribonucleic acid extraction, protein extraction.  Perform cellular assays to include but not limited to cytotoxicity, effectivity.  Operate specialized equipment (ie - plate readers, autostainers, thermocyclers, centrifuges, etc.).  Perform laboratory procedures and analyses on research specimens/samples, IAW approved research protocols.  Prepare solutions, drugs, microbiological media, and reagents for specimen analysis, as required for research protocols.  Contractor shall perform microscopy techniques.  Perform techniques to include but not limited to bright-field, fluorescent, confocal, and scanning electron microscopes, critical point dryers, and sputter coaters, slide scanner.  Perform histological techniques (ie - embedding, sectioning and staining cells and tissues).  Perform and monitor slide scanning and electronic storage of slide images.  Perform analytical chemistry techniques.  Perform the following specialized techniques to include but not limited to high resolution mass spectrometry, liquid chromatography mass spectrometry, high performance liquid chromatography, micro dialysate determination, chemical and physical analyte extraction, spectrophotometry.  Perform coagulation analytical techniques to include, but not limited, to Rotem Delta, TEG5000, or TEG 6s.   Perform flow cytometry analysis utilizing equipment such as the BD FACSymphony A5, ThemoFisher Attune, Miltenyi MACSQuant.  Contractor shall perform cell culture methods to include to aseptic technique, subculture, passaging, maintaining, freezing, and thawing.  Contractor shall perform biomedical material testing techniques to determine biomaterial and tissue properties (ie - compression, tension, vertical and horizontal torsion / bending).  Contractor shall perform biomedical imaging.  Acquire and analyze luminescent images using a photon capturing camera system.  Acquire and analyze radiographic images with radiographic imaging systems.  Acquire and analyze laser speckle images using a laser speckle imager.   Acquire and analyze spatial frequency domain images using a spatial frequency domain imager.  Acquire digital images using a high-resolution digital camera.  Perform surgical procedures, euthanasia, assistance in radiographic procedures, collect blood, conduct health checks, and perform handling/restraint of animals. Work overnight in an ICU setting with minimal government oversite. Work weekend and holiday shifts as needed to meet protocol timelines. Prepare all orders for animal supplies and equipment. Shall ensure vivarium operations are conducted efficiently according to SOPs.  Conduct preclinical research in support of battlefield-relevant combat casualty research while adhering to federal, state, and local statutes, rules, and regulations. Animal work shall be conducted in accordance with GLP, the IACUC, Animal Care and Use Review Office (ACURO), and the AALAS.  Conduct research using approved animal models to include, but not limited, to musculoskeletal trauma, wound infection, burn injury, sepsis, poly-trauma.  Conduct research using animal species such as mouse, rat, rabbit, pig, goat, sheep.  Inspect the vivarium and take corrective actions to ensure IACUC standards are maintained.  Perform small animal anesthesia, surgical procedures, experimental treatment, euthanasia, tissue harvesting, and waste and remains disposal.  Perform surgical procedures to include but not limited to cannulation, osteotomy, volumetric muscle loss, burn injury, etc.  Perform minimally invasive procedures to include but not limited to probe placement, tourniquet use, blood collection, etc.   Assist and/or perform both sterile and non-sterile surgical procedures on small animals, to include, but not limited to placement of carotid and femoral catheters, percutaneous vascular lines, intravenous cut down for vascular access, implant telemetry devices, and perform microsurgery on rodents.  Perform large animal surgical procedures, experimental treatment, tissue harvesting, and waste and remains disposal.  Perform surgical procedures to include but not limited to cannulation, osteotomy, volumetric muscle loss, burn injury, penetrating abdominal injury, wireless telemetry placement, skin excision.  Perform minimally invasive procedures to include but not limited to probe placement, tourniquet use, blood collection, tissue biopsy.  Assist and/or perform sterile and non-sterile surgical procedures on large animals to include but not limited to placement percutaneous vascular lines, intravenous cut down for vascular access, placement of carotid and femoral catheters, and implantation of telemetry devices,   Dispose of animal waste and remains IAW USAISR SOPs, policies, and safety guidelines.  Perform post-procedure follow-up, recheck, pain assessments, drug administration, and sample collection. Adequately inspect, clean, and maintain equipment. Equipment used for the generation, measurement, or assessment of data shall be adequately tested, calibrated and/or standardized.  Maintain records of all inspection, maintenance, testing, calibration and/or standardizing operations. (Deliverable #17)  Maintain records, containing the date of the operation, that describe whether the maintenance operations were routine and follow the written SOPs.   Maintain records of non-routine repairs performed on equipment because of failure and malfunction. Such records shall document the nature of the defect, how and when the defect was discovered, and any remedial action taken in response to the defect.  Label all reagents and solutions in the laboratory areas to indicate identity, titer or concentration, storage requirements, and expiration date. Deteriorated or outdated products shall not be used. Document all laboratory work and sample analysis performed in the interest of research protocol/proposal in laboratory notebook IAW best practices in local policy. (Deliverable #18)  Record research results on various platforms according to local policy.  Other duties as assigned

REQUIRED DEGREE/EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION:

Masters degree in related biomedical or biostatistical field and 5 years of related experience PHD in related degree and 3 years or relevant experience

REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

Ability to write and submit intramural and extramural grant proposals. Ability to create and submitting proposal estimates.  Experience developing, managing, and executing project schedules.  Experience drafting, developing, and conducting laboratory, animal, non-human & human subject research protocols.   Experience serving as a Principal Investigator or Associate Investigator on research protocols.  Ability to perform scientific peer reviews for proposals and protocols.  Ability to prepare periodic and status reports, as required by investigators, administrators, funding agencies, and/or regulatory bodies.  Expertise with surgical approaches, medical instrumentation, and clinical decisions for animal protocols.    Publication experience in the form of abstracts, papers, presentations, and posters.  Presentation experience at lectures, seminars, and scientific conferences.
