SA - Junior Met Station Technician

Summary of Role:

 

As the Energy Analysis Group (EAG) Junior Met Station Technician, based in Cape Town, you will support the deployment and operation of Mainstream’s solar and wind energy meteorological stations in South Africa, ensuring the highest safety and data availability. You will be part of the global EAG team and will contribute to the development of EAG standards, ensuring alignment with industry best practice resource measurement techniques for established and evolving renewable energy technologies. 

 

What you will do:

Support the EAG Station Manager in the deployment, maintenance, and decommissioning of our temporary meteorological masts, remote sensing devices, and solar stations, ensuring compliance with timelines, company standards, policies, and relevant laws. This includes planning and budgeting, liaising with contractors and project managers, conducting on-site inspections and audits, and ensuring adherence to health, safety, security, and environmental requirements.  Set up the integration of measured meteorological data into Mainstream’s internal data acquisition and management system.  Monitor all assigned operating stations weekly, following the company’s data quality control procedure. Assist the EAG Station Manager to achieve high data recovery, uninterrupted remote connectivity, and quickly resolve identified issues.  Maintain the met station documentation database weekly to ensure it is complete and meets the company’s standards, liaising with contractors and equipment suppliers as necessary.  Assemble logger boxes, review contractor assemblies and FAT reports.   Engage in scheduled/unscheduled met station repairs, which may include mast climbing, testing faulty equipment, as well Work closely with EAG Station Manager. Collaborate and share knowledge with all EAG colleagues, embracing our global operating model.  Contribute to continuous improvement of met station related processes, procedures, tools, and data management systems, including Mainstream’s in-house system for collection and processing data from all operating measurement stations. Present met station activities in EAG's Met Station Forum.  Collaborate with Mainstream’s internal departments including HSSE, Development, Engineering, Construction, Operations, Legal and Finance. Proactively engage in on-the-job learning and formal training, to prepare for a more responsible role. 

 

What we require:

Qualifications: A degree or equivalent in electrical, Electronic, or Engineering will be required. A working knowledge of typical wind, solar, and remote sensing measurement equipment and installation in accordance with relevant industry standards.  Meteorology knowledge and/or measurement station experience is a distinct advantage.  Highly analytical with attention to detail and the ability to exercise engineering judgment. Able to fault-find, identify issues, problems, and opportunities; develop appropriate and innovative solutions; make timely decisions and ask for assistance if required. Self-starter.  Working at heights certification suitable for met station works is beneficial.  Good IT skills, knowledge of Python and Windographer are an advantage.  Excellent communication skills and ability to develop professional relationships with suppliers. Ability to communicate technical issues to non-technical colleagues. Excellent verbal and written English. Knowledge of any local languages is advantageous.  Willingness to travel to remote areas as part of a team.  Full and clean driving licence.
