Road Loads Test Engineer

A Road Loads Test Engineer is responsible for delivering vehicle measurements, design loads, loads analysis, and limited analytical simulations to support vehicle design, vehicle verification, and root cause analysis for durability incidents.  The position is within the Unibody Road Load Section in the Durability and Road Loads Department, which is part of the Vehicle Engineering organization.

This position provides an opportunity to work with highly motivated and experienced engineers on the Road Loads team and to develop a cross-functional network of working with almost all the Functions and Attributes.  You will be exposed to a lab environment with full vehicle testing on ICE, Hybrid, and BEV vehicles and a CAE environment with experienced Road Load CAE-based personnel working in the same group.  Road Load test engineers are also continually interfacing with groups like Vehicle Dynamics, NVH, Chassis, Body, Powertrain Mounts, CAE teams, test verification teams, and some exposure directly with suppliers.

You'll Have…

•    Bachelor of Science in Engineering 
•    5+ years of Road Load experience
•    3+ years of experience in automotive
•    3+ years of Experience with nCode and Matlab (or equivalent) 
•    1 year of Limited experience with Signal Processing (statistics, filtering, spectral analysis, level counts, etc.)
•    5+ years of experience in SIEMENS Test Lab and SCADAS hardware (or equivalent)
•    5 years of applicable experience with various sensors, including wheel force transducers, accelerometers, telemetry, string potentiometers, and load cell development.
•    Excellent written and oral communication skills
•    Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to present work in group settings


Even Better, you'll have…
•    8+ years of engineering experience
•    Experience in full vehicle and sub-system (Chassis & P/T) modeling and simulation
•    Strong experience with Signal Processing (statistics, filtering, spectral analysis, level counts, etc.)
•    Experience in electronic controls, ECU, PCM, suspension control, CAN bus, or control systems.
•    Fundamental knowledge of: multi-body dynamics, fatigue/durability theory, and modal analysis 
•    Ability to use the following software: DET, Catia or equivalent, and MSC ADAMS (A-Car, A-Chassis),

What You'll Do…

Position Duties: 

Opportunity to work with highly motivated and experienced engineers on the Road Loads team and to develop a cross-functional network of working with almost all the Functions and Attributes Provide timely and quality-measured road loads to facilitate Ford’s product development process for durability design and verification of components, systems, and vehicles Understand customers’ requirements and inquiries while providing clear and concise analysis and conclusions Set robust design road loads targets for Chassis, Body, powertrains, e-motors, high voltage batteries, and other functions Support the Unibody Road Load section in cross-functional attribute meetings and help ensure vehicle design changes do not violate load targets. Perform comprehensive road loads comparisons and assessments via signal processing techniques, and document load comparison results, conclusions, and recommendations. Be willing to grow into the position to also support the analytical Road Load team by supporting CAD information for models, understanding the fine details of measurements in relation to robust correlation techniques with models, and be willing to learn some of the simpler analytical techniques to support the team.

Specific Road Load Measurement Duties:

Deliver vehicle measurements: instrumentation, calibration, data collection, data processing, and communication of results Translate customer requests into measurement requirements: instrumentation and test procedures Define and design custom load cells and transducers, including strain gage requirements and calibration techniques Use data processing tools like nCode and MATLAB to efficiently process road load data and analyze results. Provide operational instructions to technicians covering instrumentation, data acquisition, and test procedures Deliver efficiencies by helping to improve or refine measured strategies and methods Coordinate component testing and process data to create component models for use in Adams
