Position Summary: The Respiratory Care Trainee is responsible for providing therapeutic treatment for patients with cardiopulmonary diseases according to physician orders and protocols approved by the CMMC Medical Director for Respiratory Care in the non-critical care setting. These clinical services are limited to: administration of medical gases, aerosols and humidification, pulse oximetry, aerosol and nebulizer therapies, broncho-pulmonary hygiene, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Charting/documentation must be accompanied by licensed practitioner’s signature. The Respiratory Care Trainee supports all members of the patient care team with the overall care plan of the patient. Duties and Responsibilities: Demonstrates Competency in the Following Areas: Limitations: 1. A licensed respiratory care practitioner shall be on the premises during the trainee’s working hours. 2. The trainee is allowed to perform the following functions: Vital Signs; Breath Sounds; Nebulizer Treatments; Basic Life Support including: Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, Manual ventilation and manual compression, and Oral pharyngeal airway; Oximetry; Incentive Spirometry; Metered Dose Inhaler (MDI) instruction; Intermittent Positive Pressure Breathing (IPPB); Peak flow monitoring; Oral suctioning; Oxygen rounds; Oxygen Therapy including: Nasal Cannula, single masks and vent masks with aerosol; and Charting/documentation with accompanying licensed practitioner signature. 3. The trainee is not permitted to perform invasive procedures or procedures related to critical respiratory care, including therapeutic, diagnostic and palliative procedures, either independently or under the direct supervision of a licensed respiratory care practitioner. (See Skills List) 4. The trainee is not permitted to transcribe physician orders. Clinical Responsibilities: 1. The Respiratory Care Trainees demonstrates professional competency through approved respiratory care clinical practice protocols. 2. The Respiratory Care Trainee administers therapeutic treatments to all patient populations (See Skills List) and documents therapies and responses with accompanying licensed practitioner signature. Professional Practice Responsibilities: 1. The Respiratory Care Trainee accepts responsibility of identification and fulfillment of his/her own learning needs, and accepts responsibility for demonstrating professional behavior. 2. The Respiratory Care Trainee is recognized as a specialist in the delivery of Respiratory Care through demonstrated clinical ability, the fulfillment of annual continuing education requirements and the completion of annual competency based inventories. 3. The Respiratory Care Trainee demonstrates active involvement/support for clinical education, service line and hospital wide Performance Improvement. Organizational Responsibilities: 1. The Respiratory Care Trainee demonstrates effective communication skills, appropriate resource utilization and outstanding customer service skills. Customer Service: Interacts with all individuals in a consistent manner, providing attention, support, and assistance to foster an environment of exceptional personal service. a. Maintains a pleasant and helpful demeanor, and presents a professional appearance toward all internal and external customers at all times. b. Consistently initiates interaction to provide assistance to individuals who may not be direct customers of the employee (i.e. asks patients who appear to be lost if they need assistance in finding their way). c. Takes appropriate action to recover from a service difficulty, ensuring that the necessary action is taken to affect a resolution to the customer’s problem. d. Conducts all work activities with respect for coworkers, including the maintenance of a pleasant and professional environment, fostering calmness during stressful situations. e. Interacts with supervisory personnel in a professional, supportive and courteous manner, venting emotions appropriate to time and place. f. Demonstrates a commitment to service by consistent attendance and punctuality, scheduling absences according to departmental requirements, and incurring unplanned absences only when unavoidable circumstances exist. Age Specifi: Provides direct patient care for following age groups: 1. Infant 2. Toddler 3. Preschooler 4. School-age 5. Adolescent 6. Young Adult 7. Adult/Middle Age 8. Later Adult Organizational Requirements: Adheres to dress code, appearance is neat and clean. Completes annual education requirements. Maintains regulatory requirements. Maintains patient confidentiality at all times. Reports to work on time and as scheduled, completes work within designated time. Wears identification while on duty, uses computerized punch time system correctly. Completes in-services and returns in a timely fashion. Attends annual review and department in-services, as scheduled. Attends at least 75% staff meetings annually, reads and returns all monthly staff meeting minutes. Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner. Actively participates in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement (CQI) activities. Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices. Communicates the mission, ethics and goals of the facility, as well as the focus statement of the department. 1. Confidentiality: Maintains confidentiality of information at all times. a. Consistently maintains confidentiality of all information gained during the course of employment, respecting the privacy of others. b. Understands and maintains the confidentiality of information communicated directly from the supervisor, including discussions of a counseling nature. c. Follows policies and procedures related to medico legal matters, including confidentiality, amendments of medical records, patient rights, medical records as legal evidence and informed consent d. Copies records according to policy, assuring the appropriateness of the individual requesting information from the record prior to copying, faxing, or phoning any portion of the record. 2. Safety: Demonstrates an understanding of fire and electrical safety, infection control, body mechanics, and related areas, as appropriate to position. a. Attends mandatory in-services on fire safety, electrical safety, infection control, and body mechanics. Successfully completes competency-based training in each area. b. Follows all employee health procedures, incident reporting, and infection control requirements at all times, as appropriate to the position. c. Uses proper body mechanics at all times as required by the physical demands of the position. d. Maintains a safe work environment and performs duties of the position in a manner consistent with ensuring the safety of self and others. e. Identifies safety needs in areas outside own work environment, recommending corrective action as appropriate. 3. Expense Control: Performs job duties in a manner that maximizes expense control. a. Uses supplies, equipment, and utilities in an expeditious manner b. Consistently recommends methods to control costs while maintaining a high degree of customer service. c. Performs job tasks efficiently and effectively resulting in no unplanned overtime. Regulatory Requirements: ● Must be enrolled in the clinical portion of a COARC-accredited respiratory care education program. The clinical portion is -the second year of an associate degree program or the second year of a baccalaureate program or the completion of an entry-level correspondence program in Respiratory care approved by the board. ● Must have a current State of Maine Respiratory Care Trainee license. ● Current American Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS Certification required. ● Must successfully complete Competency Based Orientation Skills List and complete the Respiratory Care skills and Competency examinations annually. Language Skills: • Able to effectively communicate in English, both verbally and in writing. • Strong written and verbal skills. • Additional languages preferred. Skills: • Basic computer knowledge.
