JOB SUMMARY: The Pulmonary function – Respiratory Therapist performs tests on patients with suspected respiratory disorders, such as lung diseases. This is a diagnostic role, and the Therapist works with other medical staff to evaluate patients, identifying conditions to come to a firm diagnosis.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Pulmonary Function Test-Respiratory Therapist:
ASSESS:
• Perform Pulmonary Function procedures in response to patients' needs and physician orders.
• Evaluates, monitors, and maintains patients care within established guidelines in the form of policies, procedures and protocols.
• Uses assessment information and critical thinking skills while assessing the respiratory status of assigned patients.
• Communicates effectively to the patient, family, physician, nursing, support staff and others.
IMPLEMENT:
• Independently performs Pulmonary Function procedures i.e. Spirometry, DLCO, Lung Volumes, Airway resistance, Methacholine challenges, Nebulizer medication delivery, and interventions performed at the facility.
• Handles problems and / or concerns until they can be dealt with by management as appropriate.
• Maintains, troubleshoots and adjusts respiratory care equipment and diagnostic equipment.
• Communicates operational theory to other health professionals and recommends the most appropriate technology to maximize patient comfort and safety.
• Maintains timely, accurate records and documentation to satisfy department, hospital and legal requirements.
