Respiratory Therapist II

This level is assigned to a therapist who has met core skills of a respiratory therapist I.  The level II therapist is competent in all aspects of his/her job description. A proficient therapist has progressed from a task-oriented approach to performing all clinical and interpersonal related tasks with a view of the entire patient experience/team member interaction. Optimal problem-solving skills are apparent, and activities are oriented to the best possible outcome for any situation. This therapist will respond to situations with speed, confidence, flexibility, and a good attitude and is able to appropriately handle unanticipated problems or emergencies. This therapist is viewed as a positive role model for his/her peers and consistently produces complete and accurate work.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT(S):

Registered Respiratory Therapist with a Applied Associates in Science (AAS) in Respiratory Care (RC) Alternatively, individuals working in the McClellan Street Health Center (MSHC) Respiratory Care Smoking Cessation will be required to hold the following specialty credentials: Certified Tobacco Treatment Specialist (CTTS) and/or Master CTTS. Alternatively, individuals working in the MSHC RC Department will be required to hold the following specialty credentials Certified Pulmonary Function Technician and/or Registered Pulmonary Function Technician and the Asthma Educator-Certified (AE-C) and/or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) educator.  Alternatively, individuals working in the Bellevue Woman’s Center (BWC) Respiratory Care Department will be required to hold the following specialty credentials Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP).  He /she must be licensed as a Respiratory Therapist in/by the State of New York. Must have a working knowledge of Microsoft Office to include Word, Excel, and Power Point.  Ability to effectively communicate with sensitivity, tact and diplomacy, both verbally and in writing is essential.  A commitment to teamwork and innovative problem solving skills are a must.  Ability to prioritize and attention to detail are requisite. Previous experience with clinical instruction, preceptor or teaching experience a definite plus. All Therapists will be required Basic Life Support (BLS), and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications.  Neonatal Resuscitation Program Maintain 30 Continuing Education Unit’s for the licensure period-must work towards this annually Acute or sub-acute Respiratory Therapist experience >2 years One of the following: Bachelor’s Degree in Respiratory Care, Healthcare Management, or related subject Asthma Educator-Certification (AE-C) Advanced Critical Care Specialist (ACCS) Neonatal –Pediatric Specialist (NPS) Certified Pulmonary Function Technician (CPFT) Registered Pulmonary Function Technician (RPFT) Certified Tobacco Treatment Specialist (CTTS) Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Other credentialed courses will be evaluated

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The position is located indoors under normal working conditions.  Should be able to push/pull 25 lb., lift/move 15 lb. from floor to table, be able to perform moderately difficult manual manipulations such as using a key board, writing and filing for extended periods of time, must be able to perform tasks which require hand-eye coordination such as data entry, typing and using photo copiers.  Mobility requirements may include the ability to sit at a computer terminal or work station for a prolonged period of time in addition to being able to squat, stand and walk for a reasonable length of time and distance. 

 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION:

Provides direct patient care including but not limited to routine floor work, emergency care, arterial blood gas sampling. Receives report of patient status form previous shift and configures assignments to available resources Monitors completion of your patient care assignments, new orders for services and other key activities such as Codes, transports, transfers to other facilities and STAT calls and reallocates assignments and coverage where indicated. Provides assistance to other therapists where necessary. Monitors and anticipates need for additional equipment and supplies and secures them in a timely fashion so as to meet the demands of patient care throughout the facility including the needs of other campuses. Provides for a seamless transition to the oncoming shift by ensuring that a timely and accurate report of patient status and related hospital activities are conveyed. Ensures that the care rendered by the Respiratory Therapists is provided in accordance with all applicable policies and procedures and/or clinical practice guidelines. Provides for the orientation of new employees to the department by serving as the designated preceptor. Completes and signs off on the department specific orientation checklist. Ensures that incident reports are completed in a timely and accurate fashion where indicated Coordinates and participates in the provision of in-services for Respiratory Care and Nursing staffs. Works collaboratively with the Lead RT, Clinical Coordinator, RC Manager and the Director on departmental performance improvement initiatives. Works to ensure consistency in the delivery of respiratory care services and to eliminate process variations. Utilizes various quality improvement techniques including the Plan, Do, Study, Act  (PDSA) cycle, to identify problems, guide corrective recommendations and monitor process improvement. Participates in chart audits, provides input and makes recommendations regarding policy and procedures.

Salary Range:  $29.44-$44.16     /hour                   Pay is based on experience, skills, and education. Exempt positions under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) will be paid within the base salary equivalent of the stated hourly rates. The pay range may also vary within the stated range based on location.
