Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job's compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations._ **Responsibilities:** GENERAL PURPOSE As a member of the Spinal Cord Research team, this position will participate in preclinical studies aimed at the development of novel treatments for spinal cord injury. Projects will involve the use of rodent models of spinal cord injury, and duties include surgical procedures, animal behavioral testing and care, histological processing and data analysis. The individual will perform a variety of moderately complex experiments towards the understanding of formation and potential treatment of spinal cord injury with particular emphasis on the analysis of in vivo drug efficacy and impact on the central nervous system using relevant animal models. Position requires the ability to multitask, excellent organizational abilities, the ability to work well as part of a team, and evidence of interest in translational research. Initially, this individual will perform assignments working with daily supervision from the Project Director or the designee. Over time, this individual will develop some independence in planning and performing laboratory tests using procedures and practices that are standard in our laboratory. Range of procedures performed, and equipment used: Rodent animal models, surgical procedures, behavioral testing and data analysis, tissue isolation, RNA and protein isolation, gene expression analysis by Western blot and RT-QPCR, cryostat and tissue sectioning, immune-histological analyses, image analysis hardware and software. Supervision: This position reports to Dr. Chris Proschel, Ph.D. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS + Behavioral testing and analysis of the animal motor function (Catwalk). + Survival surgeries, administration of experimental therapeutic agents, post-operative care. + Administration of experimental therapeutic agents, post-operative care. + Plans and performs a variety of experiments and analyses investigating changes in tissue pathology and structure caused by injury and prevented by our new treatments. (Histology, RT-QPCR) + Calculates and records results. + Uses theoretical knowledge to interpret data and troubleshoots experiments and equipment malfunctions. Independence in problem solving is highly encouraged. + Performs general laboratory duties such as preparing reagents and re-stocking supplies. + Maintains laboratory chemicals and ensures proper disposal. + Helps to ensure laboratory compliance for safety and fire inspections. + Other job duties as assigned. MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE + High school diploma or GED required. + BA/BS in Biochemistry, Chemistry, Biology, Neuroscience, Biomedical Engineering or a related field preferred. + Or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
