This position will engage in bioinformatics.
**POSITION PURPOSE**
This position will design, develop, and implement computational workflows and software tools to process and analyze biomedical data.
**DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES**
The Research Scientist/Engineer 2 will work with the bioinformatics team at UW-Tacoma as well as external collaborators on research projects to process and analyze different types of biomedical data. They will also assist with training, education and outreach. The individual will directly report to the Principal Investigator of the lab. The Research Scientist will perform the following duties:
**DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES** Research and development (75%)
This Research Scientist/Engineer will:
+ Implement, containerize, test, evaluate and benchmark software tools for bioinformatics applications. Specifically, this position will create, test, and benchmark computational workflows for biomedical data in the Biodepot-workflow-builder platform.
+ Collaborate with biomedical scientists to process and analyze multiple types of genomics data.
+ Collect feedback and input from collaborators and other stakeholders on bioinformatics workflows and software tools developed by the UWT bioinformatics group.
+ Perform empirical studies comparing bioinformatics tools across different input parameters.
+ Customize and/or optimize analysis and/or software tools developed by collaborators to create integrated computational pipelines that are reproducible, interoperable, scalable and accessible.
+ Analyze experimental data using state-of-the-art data science and bioinformatics techniques (such as R, Python, machine learning, statistics).
+ Process large-scale bioinformatics data by deploying pipelines on internal computer servers and/or cloud platforms.
+ Conduct literature searches related to research projects and be able to contextualize results.
+ Summarize data and results in data science notebooks.Training, education, dissemination and outreach (25%)This position will:
+ Create documentation, maintain and submit software packages to public repositories.
+ Design and develop training and education materials (such as documentation, tutorials, demonstration videos, workshops etc.) that will facilitate the adoption of software tools and workflows by the research community.
+ Contribute to outreach, such as hosting workshops and training sessions.
+ Contribute data/findings/software demos for use in grant applications, manuscripts, progress reports and presentations.
+ Present findings and demos in lab meetings, at scientific working groups, seminars, webinars, meetings and/or conferences. **MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS**
+ A Bachelor's Degree in computer science, engineering or other quantitative discipline and a minimum 2 years of relevant experience. **Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.** **ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS**
+ Proficiency in programming, data science and cloud computing.
+ Prior research and publication experience in bioinformatics. **DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS**
+ Master’s degree in Computer Science, engineering, statistics, data science, bioinformatics or related field.
+ Scientific basic education in biology, medicine, or related disciplines.
+ Prior experience in collaborative NIH-funded multi-institutional projects.
+ Prior experience in processing and analyzing genomics data, such as bulk RNA-sequencing and nanopore sequencing data.
+ Proficiency in programming, data science and software containers.
+ Proficiency in tools on cloud platforms such as Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud Platform or IBM Cloud.
+ Experience in deploying and creating bioinformatics workflows, preferably in Biodepot-workflow-builder and Nextflow.
+ Prior experience in creating bioinformatics training materials.
+ Excellent communication skills.
