Research Scientist 2 + Job Number: 24506 + Functional Area: Research - Engineering + Department: Aeronautics and Astronautics + School Area: Engineering + Employment Type: Full-Time + Employment Category: Exempt + Visa Sponsorship Available: Yes + Schedule: M-F Email a Friend Save Save Apply Now Posting Description RESEARCH SCIENTIST 2, Aeronautics and Astronautics, to advance the state of the art in robotics and autonomy by developing new techniques for 3D spatial perception and mapping; perform a theoretical analysis of the resulting algorithms; perform simulations, real testing, and statistical analyses of these new methodologies; apply these new methodologies to various problems in robotics and autonomy, including the design of new perception and vision algorithms for autonomous vehicles; publish research results in leading journals and conferences in the fields of robotics, control theory, computer vision, and machine learning; help supervise graduate students at the SM and PhD levels; and engage on a regular basis with project sponsors from government and industry, taking on roles of project leadership, program development, and management. Job Requirements REQUIRED: Ph.D. in Robotics; at least one year of postdoctoral training; at least four years of experience as an academic researcher in probabilistic inference, real-time mapping, and active perception or planning; expertise in probabilistic inference, real-time mapping, and active perception or planning, applied to robotics and autonomy; ability to implement and deploy perception and navigation algorithms on real robots; a proven record of methodological innovation and rigorous analysis in areas of expertise, supported by publications in leading international conferences and journals; robust passion for robotics and autonomy; ability to motivate and supervise multiple people, including graduate students at the SM and PhD levels, in a multi-disciplinary environment; ability to interface with sponsors and manage confidential information or issues using discretion; and excellent project management and organizational skills.
