The University of Pittsburgh, Ophthalmology Department, Byrne Lab is searching for a full-time research program supervisor to oversee, organize and coordinate animal work across multiple projects in the lab, working closely with the University of Pittsburgh Division of Laboratory Animal Resources (DLAR).
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in biology or similar field
Experience in handling animals
Experience in organizing research projects
Expertise in animal behavior, physiology, psychology and care
Experience managing rodent colonies
Experience with large and small animal care
Experience with budget management, protocol maintenance, ordering supplies, and supervising staff
Oversees day-to-day management and execution of multiple complex research projects and ensures compliance with all funding agencies and sponsors. Constructs data collection instruments and crafts promotional materials. Troubleshoots data and manages database. Assists with screening, recruitment, and enrollment of study participants. Performs budgetary and purchasing functions.

The successful candidate will have strong organizational skills and interpersonal skills, as well as prior training in animal handling. Experience with handling large animals is highly preferred. ALAT/LAT certification or veterinaryexperience is preferred. The position would entail hands-on work with animals, including providing animal husbandry, enrichment, dealing with animal health issues, most often of the eye, ordering and organizing supplies and medications, prepping for procedures, and assisting DLAR with procedures such as sample collections. The supervisor would keep and maintain records of experiments and work as a liaison between the Byrne lab and DLAR staff. The manager would also assist in surgeries and carry out experiments. The Byrne Lab works with mice, rabbits, pigs and monkeys (rhesus, cynos and marmosets). The ability to work independently, to be highly self-motivated and to be detail oriented are requirements for this position.
