Job Description
Perform independent or supervisory roles in research activities requiring an advanced level of knowledge in a field of science or learning, are predominantly intellectual and varied in character, and require consistent use of discretion and judgment. Prepare proposals for funding agencies, operation of research equipment, supervision of graduate students and other lab/field personnel in research.
Responsibilities: - Organizes, conducts, and oversees all field and cotton breeding activities primarily at College Station with the possibility of other locations in central and south Texas.
- Conducts and oversees all lab based activities associated with a cotton breeding program, including ginning, seed conditioning and seed packaging and inventory; insures their completion in a timely and efficient manner. Develops field maps; recommends field designs.
- Oversees numerous student workers.
- Maintains information flow through regular meetings with Project Leader
- Oversees all field activities associated with a field based plant breeding program such as field preparation, plant/crop growth and husbandry, emasculation of flowers and hand pollination; harvesting of strain performance trials, individual progeny rows, and individual plants selected by Project Leader.
- Advises and assists graduate students on field activities; seed/generation labeling; seed storage
- Operates and maintains field equipment and lab equipment associated with a field based plant breeding program.
- Conducts statistical analyses of breeding and research data.
- Other duties as required
Required Education and Experience:- Bachelor’s degree in Agronomy or related field - Two years of related professional experience.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:- Familiarity with appropriate laboratory and/or technical equipment
- Ability to occasionally travel overnight
- Ability to lift more than 20 lbs.
- Working knowledge of spreadsheet and word processing; accounting skills.
- Interpersonal and communications skills with ability to establish effective working relationships.
- Ability to multi task and work cooperatively with others.
Preferred Licenses and Certification:
-Texas Driver’s license
- Pesticide applicators license (may be obtained after employment)
