The Hussman Institute has an exciting opportunity for a full time Research Associate 3, SOM position. The incumbent assumes responsibility for the design and performance of research focused on the development of novel experimental therapies for human malignancies. The incumbent contributes to collaborations with scientists within the University of Miami or elsewhere. Moreover, this individual works as part of a team and assists with the maintenance of laboratory equipment, protocols, and supplies. CORE JOB FUNCTIONS + Maintains daily operations and performs procedures related to new and on-going research projects. + Assists with ordering, purchasing, and maintenance of all required reagents and supplies for laboratory activities, and monitors and maintains inventory of supplies and stocks. + Assists with the maintenance of institutional biosafety and animal care protocols, laboratory safety records, and standard operating procedures. + Performs and assists other research staff with standard laboratory techniques. + Develops, adapts, and implements new laboratory procedures. + Records, organizes, and writes up experimental results for submission of manuscripts and for scientific presentations. + Keeps abreast of latest literature in the field and searches for references to technical problems. + Maintains current knowledge of the methods and techniques related to the specific field of research. + Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets. CORE QUALIFICATIONS + Bachelor’s Degree in relevant field required + Minimum 5 years of relevant experience DEPARTMENT ADDENDUM Department Specific Functions Perform a variety of complex technical duties involved in conducting physical, chemical, biological and other research laboratory tests, experiments and determinations. Execute high-throughput sample preparation protocols for the Center for Genome Technology’s biorepository core. Operate various laboratory equipment, including, but not limited to, FlexStar+ Extraction system, Qiasymphony, BioMek FX Liquid Handler, Hamilton Vantage Liquid Handler, Spectramax plate reader, ND 8000 Spectrophotometer, Qubit 2.0/3.0, XL-20 Tube Handler and Agilent 2100 Bioanalyzer and Tapestation and Azenta BioStore II -80C robotic freezer. Analyze data for quality and consistency, troubleshoot equipment and protocols, prepare reports on progress/trends and make appropriate recommendations to supervisors.Accountabilities (For Non-exempt Employees Include Percent of Effort): Operate various lab equipment including but not limited to centrifuges, liquid handling robots and PCR blocks. Perform quantitation and qualitation of DNA/RNA using Nanodrop, Qubit, gel electrophoresis, qPCR, Agilent 2100 Bioanalyzer and Tapestation. Analyze data for quality and consistency, troubleshoot equipment and protocols, prepare reports on progress/trends and make appropriate recommendations or conclusions to supervisor. Schedule meetings with company technical support and engineers to resolve experimental and hardware issues. Compile new SOPs(Clinical Studies) Serve as point-person for the following high-profile clinical studies. Track shipments, specimens, correspondences, study reporting and a variety of additional tasks as they relate to each clinical study. Lead efforts to obtain CAP accreditation for the Biorepository. Assist in new study intake, clientele personnel intake, clinical kit configuration and clinical clientele reporting. Demonstrate an ability to learn new technologies and standard operating protocols in a timely manner. Prioritize and complete research in a timely, reproducible manner independently and within a team setting. Supervise, train and instruct lower level personnel in laboratory techniques and procedures. Coordinate study implementation and scheduling.
