Essential functions (job duties): The ABA Legal Education Police Practices Consortium (“Consortium”) and Wayne State University Law School invites applications for the role of ABA Police Practices Post-Graduate Fellow. The Consortium aims to advance the practice of policing, promote racial equity in the criminal legal system, and eliminate policing tactics that are racially motivated or have disparate impact based on race. The Consortium’s fellowship program has run since fall 2022 and has since welcomed hundreds of students into its community of learning on issues of policing and public safety. Going forward, it will shift in its structure to account for the changing needs of participating schools. Beginning in Spring 2025, the fellowship will consist of up to twenty students from law schools currently members of the Consortium. Throughout the year, they will research a topic related to policing (to be determined in coordination with the Director), which will culminate in the in-person presentation of that research at the fellowship’s annual symposium, currently anticipated for June 2025. The Selection Committee is charged with selecting a Post-Graduate Fellow willing to oversee and support the work of twenty law school fellows from throughout the United States. The candidate must also be capable of organizing a symposium for the engagement of local stakeholders in dialogue on policing practices and policies. Essential Fellowship Functions and Responsibilities: Undertake research independently. Work with the Fellowship Director to compile and elevate findings of the fellowship class. Assist in relevant content creation (e.g., webinars, podcasts, magazine articles) to further the goals of the Consortium. Outreach to subject matter experts to be involved in the Consortium’s symposium, anticipated for early summer 2025. Identify additional learning opportunities for law student fellows. Unique duties: The fellowship will be led by a Post-Graduate Fellow who (ideally) is a graduate of the fellowship program. This would allow for a fellowship leader who understands what the fellowship requires, as well as providing an opportunity for the post-graduate fellow to continue their work in their community. The post-graduate fellow will be overseen by the Fellowship Director. The post-graduate fellow and faculty advisor will meet once a month with each fellow to discuss the progression of the fellow’s project, any stumbling blocks, and provide potential resources. The post-graduate fellow will also host weekly office hours. The post-graduate fellow should assist fellows in their work by grouping fellows with similar topics to facilitate collaboration and research sharing. The post-graduate fellow would have primary responsibility of working with the host law school to develop the annual symposium. They may schedule a few guest speakers or events for the fellows throughout the year, but the primary focus would be the coordination of the symposium. The post-graduate fellow would also allocate 10 or more hours each week to furthering policing work in their local community. This role is currently anticipated as a one-year position. It is renewable with approval from the Advisory Committee and contingent on funding. Qualifications: Required Education, Qualifications, Experience: Previous association with a Consortium-member law school Interest in quantitative and qualitative data collection as it relates to policing practices. Ability to think creatively and collaboratively on pressing issues related to policing and public safety. Ability to work independently and remotely. Willingness to move up/move back to allow for other voices to be heard, promoting an inclusive, respectful, and productive work environment. Demonstrated ability to work productively and respectfully with stakeholders and others from a diversity of backgrounds and perspectives. Demonstrated written and interpersonal communication skills.
