Research Assistant - Department of Oncology Wayne State University is searching for an experiencedResearch Assistant - Department of Oncologyat its Detroit campus location. Essential functions (job duties): Perform laboratory based scientific techniques or clinical/population science (human subjects) research. Design and perform experiments, recruit participants for studies by developing surveys and interviewing candidates. Participate in implementing research objectives, ensuring compliance with all legal, regulatory and protocol guidelines. Assist staff with experiments/research protocols as required. Communicate with principal investigator and Postdoctoral scholars/fellows on the status of research. Collect and log laboratory results, clinical outcomes and/or survey data. Evaluate and perform data analysis using graphs, charts or tables to highlight the key points of the research results collected in accordance with the research protocols as stipulated. Proofread and edit research data and documents to ensure accuracy. Assist principal investigator with writing methods and summarizing/organizing data to be used in preparing and presenting presentations for professional, scientific and academic conferences and submittal to academic and scholarly peer-reviewed journals. Maintain the laboratory work areas including routine maintenance on laboratory equipment as required. Order and organize required research supplies and records. Maintain cleanliness and organization of work station. Perform other related duties as assigned. Unique duties: - Assist in handling, monitoring, and caring for small animal models. - Perform experimental procedures and therapeutic evaluations as directed by Core directors and senior AMTEC staff (including cell implant, drug formulation, injections, health assessments, in vivo imaging, anesthesia, surgical procedures). - Collect, record and calculate tumor growth metrics from raw data. - Collect and process/preserve various animal tissues including blood or cells with aseptic technique. - Perform related basic cancer lab techniques including cell culture, isolation of whole blood, plasma or serum, cell preservation and processing (prep for liquid nitrogen storage, SNAP, formalin-fixed paraffin embedded blocks). - Maintain lab equipment and inventory of lab supplies, wash, sterilize and prep animal study supplies for use, glassware and instruments, prep of stock solutions, cell media and follow general lab cleanliness SOP in compliance with laboratory safety protocols. - Support and assist in preparation of reports, presentations and documents related to research projects, including IACUC protocols, grants and manuscripts. - Permanent hire is contingent upon passing all required regulatory and safety training for working with animals and in the laboratories at Wayne State University including Biological, Chemical and Radioactive Hazard certifications. Qualifications: Education: Bachelor's degree Bachelor’s degree in a related field of study, preferred. Requires advanced knowledge predominantly intellectual in character in a field of science or learning acquired by a prolonged course of specialized intellectual instruction. Experience: Entry level (less that a year of job-related experience) Experience performing basic research techniques or interacting with human subjects, preferred. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Ability to work independently. Ability to analyze, summarize and interpret research findings and data in reports and spreadsheets and communicate results. Knowledge of scientific integrity principles. Excellent time management and organization skills. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and demonstrated ability to work with others in a collaborative environment. Microsoft office software skills. Preferred qualifications: - In addition to a Bachelor's degree, courses completed in Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics (1 year each) Preferred. - Additional coursework in Microbiology, Zoology, Biochemistry or Physiology is beneficial. - The applicant should be proficient in English (both written and spoken), versed with Microsoft Office, able to plot numbers (generate graphs), have good hand dexterity, being able to lift approximately 10-12 lb animal cages, strong math skills, as well as solid organizational and time management skills. - Prior experience working with small animals in a lab setting is preferred; must be receptive to ongoing hands-on instruction, team-oriented, and have the willingness to actively participate in the development of new lab techniques. The position also requires pre-arranged work assignments that may occur during weekends, after hours, and holidays as an animal-based core is operational all year round.
