Research Assistant

Job Description:

Summary:

The Research Assistant will assist with various aspects of experimental procedures, equipment setup, and lab general operations. Responsibilities include mouse husbandry, genotyping, histology, behavior, basic laboratory management, and assisting with experiments that span molecular, anatomical, and systems-level investigations. This position offers the opportunity to gain hands on experience with cutting-edge neuroscience techniques while contributing to collaborative projects aimed at advancing our understanding of somatosensory processing in health and disease. This role is ideal for motivated individuals seeking to contribute to exciting discoveries, and develop independent research skills in a supportive and inclusive environment.

The Chirila Lab in the Department of Neuroscience is a new research group focused on defining the functional organization and plasticity of the somatosensory system. We combine molecular genetics, in vivo and in vitro electrophysiology, optogenetics, histology, computational approaches, and behavioral analyses to address fundamental questions in sensory neuroscience.

This position has a fixed term end date of one year from date of hire, which may be extended based upon availability of funding.

Job Qualifications:

Education and Experience

Required: Bachelor’s degree in Neuroscience, Biology, or other related areas of science or engineering

Required: Extensive related coursework (grade 7)

Required: 1-2 years of related experience (grade 8)

And/or equivalent combination of education and research experience

Experience in rodent wet labs, rodent handling and rodent surgery is highly desired.

Experience with electrophysiology and optical techniques is a plus.

Experience performing tissue histology and antibody staining is a plus.

Experience using and/or programming with MATLAB, Python, ImageJ and Arduino, is a plus

Ability to discuss ongoing research projects with group members, including during weekly lab meetings

Basic computing and data analysis skills.

Ability to be observant and self-motivated, think critically, and problem-solve.

Possesses a willingness and ability to support a diverse and inclusive campus community.
