Research Assistant

Job Description:

Position Purpose

The research assistant (RA) will support a mixed-methods research study, based at the Brown’s Center for Alcohol & Addiction Studies, characterizing cannabis messaging across various types of sources and platforms.  Work activities involve managing recruitment; implementing study protocol and conducting in-person and Zoom-based research sessions with study participants; facilitating participant outreach, tracking and retention; managing online and phone app survey data (data are collected in the natural environment using smartphone applications); and managing participant payments. The RA is expected to work onsite, collaborate with project staff to maintain variable directories and other project documentation, conduct literature research as needed, and assemble materials for IRB modifications and progress reports.

Major responsibilities include:

Participant recruitment and retention         25 %

Monitor ecological momentary assessment (EMA) data collection and survey maintenance      25 %

Conduct study sessions with participants    25 %

Serve as a fund custodian and assist in other aspects of research including assembling information for IRB oversight and relevant amendments      25 %

Job Qualifications and Competencies

Education and Experience

Required: BA or BS in psychology, public health or related field with 1-2 years experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required: Proficiency in Word, Excel, and Powerpoint

Coursework in research design and experience with research is strongly preferred

Experience in programming online surveys (e.g., Qualtrics software) is preferred

Experience managing databases is preferred

Experience in screening potential research participants strongly preferred

Coursework in addiction, substance use and/or psychopharmacology is preferred

Job Competencies

Must be available to work onsite at Brown University

Must be available to work flexible hours (occasional late afternoon or weekend hours may be required)

Excellent oral and written communication skills

Ability to work independently is required

Ability to function as a research team member and leader

Strong organizational skills and attention to detail

Ability to multitask and prioritize effort to meet project goals

Openness to and interest in learning new skills

Two-year commitment is required.
