Pay Range

$39.98 - $49.65 Hourly for the 532.2 level

$47.93 - $59.49 Hourly for the 532.3 level

Job Description

We have an opening for a Senior Fabrication Technician-Electronics supporting the Global Security (GS) Directorate. In this position you will have the opportunity to provide electronic fabrication support for LLNL’s world recognized Nuclear Emergency Support Team (NEST), Render Safe Operations (RSO) in their unique training aids, preparedness, and response activities. In this role, you will build and refurbish electrical and electronic assemblies, integrate, and install complex electronic components as well as provide support for the customized training aids, and other prototype equipment associated with these training aids. This position is in the National Security Engineering Division (NSED) within the Engineering Directorate. This position will include the opportunity for overtime to meet a fast-paced customer delivery requirement.   There are opportunities to travel and field custom training aids in offsite locations.

The position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

You will

Provide general board level fabrication techniques for electronic components and circuit boards using standard hand tools including crimpers, cutters, and soldering irons.Complete general fabrication prototyping and production of electro-mechanical systems and cables, as well as printed circuit board assembly, perform standard and surface mount soldering, rework, and repair assignments.Perform general electrical tasks with components and systems, using established work control processes and procedure requirements; fabricate, maintain, assemble, and disassemble; and work from drawings, and verbal instructions.Set up equipment, general troubleshooting, field support equipment with sponsors, maintenance, and minor modifications of simple hardware.Organize parts and assemblies and be able to determine and communicate discrepancies.Maintain a high level of safety and security awareness while working in the laboratories and be able to conduct routine safety inspections as well as audit one’s own work with an emphasis on housekeeping of wiring.Assist with translating moderately complex schematic drawings, parts lists, assembly drawings, and verbal requirements into specific hardware deliverables.

Additional job responsibilities, at the 532.3 level

Perform advanced electrical tasks with components and systems, fabricate, maintain, assemble, and disassemble; this includes planning, selecting material, equipment, and determining solutions.Understand testing of HV circuits and applicable safety standards.Provide advanced technical support as well as organizational support to engineers and senior level staff in preparation and coordination of training deployments. Qualifications This position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance or an active Top Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency at the time of hire.Associate's Degree in electronics or electronics manufacturing, or equivalent combination of education and related experience.Intermediate understanding of hand tools, test equipment, digital volt meters, and other inspection techniques.Experience completing intermediate fabrication prototyping and production of electro-mechanical systems and cables, as well as printed circuit board assembly, rework, and repair assignments.Intermediate technical skills and knowledge of electronic circuit design, ability to solve problems using established guidelines, techniques, and procedures.Effective verbal, presentation, and written communications skills.Ability to travel domestically in support of offsite experimental test campaigns.Ability to drive a vehicle greater than 10,000lbs GVW.

Additional qualifications at the 532.3 level

Ability to maintain complex technical documentation relating to experimental assemblies.Advanced experience with 3D models and the ability to generate complex 2D detail drawings for fabrication.Demonstrated ability to work with others and multi-task assignments under minimal supervision. This is a Flexible Term appointment, which is for a definite period not to exceed six years.  If final candidate is a Career Indefinite employee, Career Indefinite status may be maintained (should funding allow).

Security Clearance

This position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance or active Top Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency at time of hire.
