Based on education, experience and interview, this opportunity will be filled commensurately at either title in the Engineer job family. For this posting, minimum requirements are stated for lower grade. Increased expectations are for the higher grade.
Engineer Sr. (grade 8)
Engineer (grade 7) = bachelor's degree in engineering + four (4) years of experience; OR, master's degree in engineering + two (2) years of experience; OR, may be considered as entry-level with doctorate/Ph.D. degree in engineering.
More Specific to This Opportunity: In support of maintaining our generating fleet, targeting the generators and motors, the filling of this position at the mid-/senior levels will allow Electrical Engineering to support all generating facilities by:
- Providing Generating Facilities with expert-level support in the areas of guidance, inspection, and troubleshooting for generators and other rotating equipment. Additional work will support the balance of plant (Switchgear, MCCs, Circuit Breakers, Batteries, Non-segmented Bus, Transformers).
- Providing support of the NERC Compliance Regulatory requirements. This support includes NERC Operation & Planning (O&P) PRC, MOD and FAC standards.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Assumes responsibility to configure, administer, implement, and maintain specialized programs/ systems/ equipment to support the Generation Organization.
- Supports the development and maintenance of the required processes and programs that keep equipment in operational condition.
- Troubleshoots system/equipment hardware and software.
- Schedules, performs, and tests system/equipment upgrades.
- Reviews and approves plans for changes and/or modifications.
- Performs other project-related support activities as assigned.
- Maintains strict documentation standards for the specialized programs/systems/equipment to document plans, processes, and procedures.
- Electronically archives records for historical purposes/evidence.
- Serves as the primary contact for providing historical information or details about future enhancements.
- Develops, implements, and improves tools to automate managing and reporting functions where possible.
- Communicates and collaborates with local and/or remote resources to manage the specialized programs/systems/equipment in alignment with Generation’s requirements.
- Works with Plant Staff, Plant Management, and others to facilitate a successful local program for the specialized program/system/equipment at specific sites.
- Collaborates with other sites to recognize common platforms and to promote consistency and continuous improvement within the Generation Organization.
- Participates in planning and implementing projects associated with any new program requirements or system/equipment upgrades or repairs.
- Leads, facilitates, and coordinates work activities of others within the work group, team, department, corporate entity, or those external to the company as required to perform all routine work. Provides guidance and exercises judgment and discretion in providing guidance and direction to others.
- Assures safety of all activities.
Technical Expertise: Possesses advanced knowledge and performs varied assignments with proficiency in the application of theory and analytical techniques to solve diverse problems and complete extensive analyses. Understands interrelationship between systems and component equipment. Analyzes and recommends enhancements to business processes.
Leadership and Guidance: Coordinates work activities of others within the work group, department, or other corporate entity as necessary to perform routine engineering work. Performs routine engineering activity independently. Provides training and guidance to lower-level employees.
Planning and Organizational Ability: Develops input necessary to forecast costs for the routine projects, improvements requisitions, etc.
Problem Solving and Initiative: Resolves and initiates solutions to routine and/or moderately complex problems which usually require additional definition/clarification before analysis can begin. Identifies problems that are beyond the normal routine. Seeks out opportunities and embrace new ideas and approaches.
Communication Skills: Helps coordinate the work of other engineers in an efficient and effective manner.
Interpersonal Skills: Leads aspects of team effort. Effectively leverages skills developed from company programs such as Power Up & Lead.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Has typically acquired 4 or more years of related engineering experience along with a Bachelor's degree in engineering in a program accredited by ABET*; or 2 years of related engineering experience along with a Master’s degree in engineering from a program accredited by ABET* .
Individuals with a PhD in engineering from an engineering program accredited by ABET* may be considered for entry into the organization at this level.
Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) in any U.S. state or Puerto Rico** is encouraged and preferred.*ABET - Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology.
Acceptable alternatives are
(1) a Bachelor’s degree in engineering (non-ABET), plus a Professional Engineers (PE) license in any state of the U.S. or
(2) a Bachelor’s degree in engineering (non-ABET) plus a Master’s degree or PhD in engineering from a university with an ABET accredited Bachelor’s program.** Confirmation is required to ensure the PE obtained in Puerto Rico aligns with NCEES standards.
INITIAL POSITION / BASE SALARY FUNDING: ($83,413 - $122,491). In addition to base salary, AEP offers competitive Total Rewards including: discretionary annual incentive, 401(k), pension, health insurance, life/AD&D insurance, vacation, educational assistance, etc.

$83,413.00-104,267.50 USDCandidates will be considered based on their qualifications and the candidate’s ability to work from an approved work location. Although the location is flexible, AEP does not have a presence in all states and localities. The following locations are NOT currently approved for this position: AK, CA, CO, CT, DE, HI, IA, ID, KS, MA, ME, MS, MT, ND, NH, NJ, NM, NV, NY, OR, RI, SD, UT, VT, WY, US Territories or international work locations. AEP will consider qualified candidates who are willing to relocate to an approved work location, at the candidate’s expense, provided the relocation can be completed within a timeframe that meets AEP’s staffing needs.
