Overview

The Trauma Step-Down Unit (TSDU) is a 9-bed intermediate critical care unit specializing in the care of traumatically injured patients. Patients with serious but less critical injuries can be admitted to the TSDU directly from the ED or the Ross Trauma Admitting Area. Patients usually cared for in this area include those with traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, rib fractures and lung injuries, as well as diverse orthopedic injuries requiring frequent monitoring and care. Patients may also be transferred to the TSDU from the Trauma/Surgical ICU when their clinical condition has improved but close monitoring or ventilator support is still required. The unit is staffed with registered nurses, critical care technicians, trauma surgery nurse practitioners and resident physicians. Staff also work closely with respiratory therapy and specialized surgical groups such as orthopedics and neurosurgery. Nurses and critical care technicians working in this area receive education specific to the care of the trauma patient.
