Job Summary:
The Registered Nurse (RN) - Surgical Services will demonstrate proficiency in administering the fundamentals of the nursing process, contribute to nursing assessment and the development of a nursing care plan, and participate in the evaluation of nursing care in all areas of the surgical services department to include, pre, intra, and post operative care. This nurse will help to maintain a sterile and safe environment for patients in the operating room. This nurse needs to be a strong communicator with a friendly, calming personality and must be able to work well under pressure.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
+ Supervises care given by nonprofessional staff and provides instruction as needed.
Duties/Responsibilities:
+ Supports nursing care standards through adherence to existing policies and procedures.
+ Correctly identifies, communicates and collaborates on patient problems, priorities or issues based upon assessment data. Uses the body systems approach to perform a patient assessment.
+ Obtains and documents nursing history from patients and/or significant others that is comprehensive of present condition and prior problems. Performs basic assessment of patients, indicating adequate knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and pathology. Records vital signs, notes changes, and pursues more-specific investigations as needed. Identifies abnormal diagnostic data and shows a fundamental understanding of its implications by reporting information to the physician and others caring for the patient, and by incorporating information in the nursing care plan.
+ Uses assessment information to develop a care plan before the end of duty time that communicates enough information for incoming staff to adequately care for the patient. Reviews and develops care plans for assigned patients. Includes the patient and his or her family in planning care, establishing priorities, and setting goals.
+ Uses care plans as a basis for providing safe and therapeutic care to patients. Communicates with the patient and his or her family and other members of the health care team in carrying out the goals of the care plan. Accepts accountability for clinical care of assigned patients including supervision of nonprofessional personnel.
+ Evaluates and notes the patient's response to nursing care defined in the nursing care plan and medical records.
+ Ensures that patient care needs are met and provide professional care to all aged patients ensuring all procedures were carried out accurately and safely.
+ Accurately assess patients' physical, psycho-social, ethnic, cultural and spiritual needs.
+ Administers and documents medication according to policy and procedure and follows the 5 rights of medication administration.
+ If functioning as the circulating RN, the surgical nurse is responsible for assisting the CRNA as well as functioning as a non-sterile member assisting the surgeon. Responsibilities include, positioning the patient, observing progress of the procedure and providing additional instruments/supplies as needed, counting sponges and sharps, accurately using all equipment and ensuring patient safety and wellbeing is the utmost priority.
+ The pre-op PACU nurse is responsible for completing the initial assessment on all patients. Assures appropriate pre-op document and orders are completed prior to surgery.
+ Assures appropriate consents are signed by patient and provider.
+ Provides appropriate care for the postoperative patients.
+ The surgical nurse may be needed and is required to collect, decontaminate, assemble, sterilize and distribute instruments, supplies and equipment used for patient care. Accurately assembles, labels, and prepares instruments and supplies for sterilization according to available references and resources.

Education and Experience:
+ Current license to practice nursing in Montana.
+ Minimum of 2 years practicing as a registered nurse.
+ Current ACLS and PALS certification or must obtain within 6 months of employment.
+ Current BLS certification required.
Physical Requirements:
+ Full range of body motion and flexibility.
+ Ability to climb, reach, kneel, stoop, and bend.
+ Exposure to body fluids, human tissues, contagious diseases, sharps and unpleasant sights, odors, and materials.
+ Exposure to hazardous chemicals including cleaning agents and disinfectants.
+ Exposure to electrical current.
+ May have irregular hours and long periods of standing.
+ Extensive walking, moderate sitting, standing, and lifting.
