Special Information: This Recreation Technician position will primarily be located at Cooney Reservoir State Park with some responsibility for other selected FWP sites including Fishing Access Sites (FAS). This position runs from approximately May through September as a seasonal permanent position set at 0.4 FTE. This position will be based at Cooney Reservoir State Park located in Carbon County. Cooney SP is a 300 acre site with an emphasis on water-based recreation and camping. Visitation is very high in the summer months. Fishing, boating, birdwatching, hiking, biking, camping, swimming, and many more outdoor recreation activities are offered at Cooney SP. There are development and site improvement projects in the works, so the Recreation Ranger may assist with these processes. The position will be supervised by the Cooney SP Recreation Manager and includes responsibilities at 10 Fishing Access Sites along the Stillwater River and West Rosebud Creek and Big Lake Wildlife Management Area in Stillwater County. Cooney State Park-Nestled in the foothills of the Beartooth Mountains and south-central Montana is one of the most visited water-based recreation areas in the state. Part of the park's success can be attributed to its proximity to the Billings area, just a 40-minute drive. Another reason is the phenomenal trout, perch and walleye fishing that draws anglers from both near and far. Job Duties: The Recreation Technician position is a staff member within the Stillwater geographic unit of FWPs Region 5 which includes State Parks, Fishing Access Sites, Wildlife Management Areas, and river corridors. The Recreation Technician assists the unit's Recreation Manager and Ranger with operations at the sites for the purpose of providing management to administration, operation, recreation, visitor use, and natural, cultural, and historical resources. This position provides essential services and addresses tasks as they arise. The Recreation Technician will work effectively as part of a team with other staff, volunteers, and park rangers. This position is responsible for providing good customer service, fee collection and remittance, interpretation and education, campground reservation system operations, campground host coordination, enterprise sales and other duties as assigned. Contacts visitors to provide park and tourist information, fee payment procedures, and encourage positive use of park facilities. Performs campground reservation system operations and monitoring of the park's facilities and visitor levels. Closes and balances cash drawer daily. Provides emergency assistance and/or medical aid to the level of training received. Monitor and assist with user conflicts, traffic control and parking on high-use days. Additionally, the Recreation Technician may perform light maintenance duties such as maintaining the comfort stations, refuse collection and janitorial services. Opportunities to gain training in trail management, noxious weed management, interpretation, and other visitor services may arise. The position is supervised by a Recreation Manager. In the absence of the Recreation Ranger, the incumbent may be assigned acting Recreation Ranger responsibilities. A Technician may be assigned to multiple geographic units or be called upon to assist with, collaborate on, or share operational functions of another of another geographic unit as circumstances require. Applicants should have a background in natural resources, recreation, or recreation management. They will need to be knowledgeable of, or willing to learn, the laws, policies, and regulations under which the agency operates and site rules. Technicians are expected to explain site rules and regulations to visitors, and diffuse conflicts. They must behave ethically and appropriately when serving visitors. ** *Minimum Qualifications (Education and Experience):* Graduation from high school or equivalent education. One year of college or vocational training experience in park and recreation management, interpretive visitor center, or closely related setting is preferred; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. Required at time of application: General knowledge of basic customer service and safe work habits Ability to: educate and inform visitors on compliance with rules and regulations and State laws; collect fees and make change; sell merchandise and account for monies collected; read, maintain, and prepare records and reports; and assist visitors in emergency situations.
