This Recreation Ranger position will primarily be located at Cooney Reservoir State Park with some responsibility for other selected FWP sites including Fishing Access Sites (FAS) and a Wildlife Management Area (WMA). This position runs from approximately April to the end of November as a seasonal permanent position set at 0.75 FTE. This position will be based at Cooney Reservoir State Park located in Carbon County. Cooney SP is a 300 acre site with an emphasis on water-based recreation and camping. Visitation is very high in the summer months. Fishing, boating, birdwatching, hiking, biking, camping, swimming, and many more outdoor recreation activities are offered at Cooney SP. There are development and site improvement projects in the works, so the Recreation Ranger may assist with these processes. The position will be supervised by the Cooney SP Recreation Manager and includes responsibilities at 10 Fishing Access Sites along the Stillwater River and West Rosebud Creek and Big Lake Wildlife Management Area in Stillwater County. Cooney State Park - Nestled in the foothills of the Beartooth Mountains and south-central Montana is one of the most visited water-based recreation areas in the state. Part of the park's success can be attributed to its proximity to the Billings area, just a 40-minute drive. Another reason is the phenomenal trout, perch and walleye fishing that draws anglers from both near and far. Whether you enjoy fishing, boating, or jet-skiing, swimming, camping or just to get outside for some adventure or relaxation, Cooney State Park may become one of your favorite destinations too! To be considered for this position applicants must complete and include a State of Montana This position requires a willingness to work odd hours, weekends, and holidays as necessary. Applicants should have a background in natural resources, recreation, and/or cultural resources with knowledge of recreation management and familiarity with natural and cultural resource management principles. They must be able to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, in a concise and interpretable manner, with department employees, the public, user groups, and other agencies. Rangers will need to have proficiency in the safe handling and operation of site-specific modes of transportation, such as pickup trucks, cars, motorized and non-motorized watercraft, bicycles, and ATVs. They will need to have or attain knowledge of laws, policies, and regulations under which the agency and each site operates. Rangers should have the ability to manage conflicts among visitors and user groups and are expected to negotiate, explain, and diffuse conflict among parties with differing views and visitors frustrated with department/site rules and policies. They must behave ethically and appropriately when serving visitors. *Job Duties:* The Recreation Ranger position is a lead staffer within a geographic unit of State Parks, Fishing Access Sites, Wildlife Management Areas, and river corridors. The Recreation Ranger position assists the Recreation Manager with non-maintenance operations for the purpose of providing visitor services, managing outdoor recreation, including collection and safeguarding of monies, and stewarding the natural, cultural, and historical resources of the State of Montana. Work will primarily encompass broad administrative, operational, and public relations activities. This position provides essential services and tasks as they arise, such as visitor contacts, rule compliance, fee collection and remittance, interpretation and education, and other duties as assigned. The Ranger works under the immediate supervision of the Recreation Manager and provides direction for other staff, AmeriCorps members, and volunteers. In the absence of the Recreation Manager, the incumbent may be assigned acting Recreation Manager responsibilities. Qualified applicants of this position normally possess a combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor's degree in Recreation Management, Archaeology, Geology, Entertainment Management, Public Administration, or related fields.
