Parks Activities Specialist Pay:
+ Training pay is $18.59 for all positions.

Summary:
This recruitment is for Certified Fitness Instructors specializing in general fitness and wellness for a broad audience, whether through group classes or personal training, at Portland Parks & Recreation Community Centers and Schools Uniting Neighborhood (SUN) Community School Programs. Attendees range in abilities, ages, and fitness levels, seeking overall health improvement. These roles are not intended for sports-specific instructors or coaches.
Portland Parks & Recreation operates five large Community Centers and three smaller neighborhood centers, offering drop-in fitness classes, registered activities, and personal training sessions open to everyone. SUN has 3 locations also offering drop-in fitness classes.
Note: This job is open for a long time. There are no set interviews or hiring dates. Applicants will be contacted when positions become available.
Job Appointment: Casual, Part-time
Schedule: This job has flexible hours and might include working during the day, evenings, weekends, or holidays. The number of hours you work each week can change based on program needs, and there is no guarantee of work hours each week.
Location: These jobs are at different locations around Portland. When you apply you can choose as many locations as you want to work at.

To Qualify
Qualifications Needed:
+ Ability to promote a welcoming and friendly atmosphere.
+ General knowledge of assigned recreation area.
+ Ability and experience in building good relationships and communicating respectfully with a diverse team of recreation staff, city workers, and program participants.
+ Ability and experience in noticing, stopping, and handling safety and emergency situations.
+ Ability to problem-solve and respond to customer concerns.
+ Ability to learn and show skills, or experience, in one-on-one and small group Personal Training.
+ Ability to learn and show skills, or experience, in teaching different types of Group Exercise classes like 32-count block, Tabata or HIIT, and mind/body classes like Yoga and Pilates.
+ Knowledge of how to take care of fitness equipment and do yearly maintenance.
+ Knowledge and experience in using the best practices for health and wellness marketing and promoting fitness memberships.
Additional qualifications needed:
1. One year of teaching experience.
2. One certification from one of these approved organizations:
+ ACSM (American College of Sports Medicine)
+ ACE (American Council on Exercise)
+ AFAA (Aerobic and Fitness Association of America)
+ NSCA (National Strength and Conditioning Association)
+ NCSF (National Council on Strength and Fitness)
+ ISSA (International Sports Science Association)
+ NESTA (National Exercise and Sport Training Association)
+ NASM (National Academy of Sports Medicine)
+ PCC Fitness Technology Degree
+ Cooper Institute Certification
+ Four-year college degree in a fitness related field (e.g., Athletic Training, Exercise Science, Exercise Physiology)
+ Any accredited certification distributed by NCCA (National Commission for Certifying Agencies)

Fitness Instructor Jobs (Parks Activities Specialists):
These jobs are not union represented.
Instructors will instruct and/or monitor classes/activities in the area of assignment. Instructors may develop lesson plans related to the area of assignment based upon overall program objectives and guidelines and prepare materials for instruction of classes/activities. They will record participation for classes/activities and request class/activity supplies. Instructors perform duties related to customer service, cross marketing, and delivery of assigned activities.
Ages:
All Fitness Instructors (Must be at least 18 years old).
Pay Range (new employees start at the entry hourly rate):
All Fitness Instructors base pay is $25.83 - $36.67 (entry is $25.83 or $28.92 based on certifications held)
Training Pay:
All Fitness Instructor training pay is $18.59.
Fitness Instructor - Group Exercise
Required Certifications: Approved certification(s) from a bureau recognized organization as outlined below AND one year of teaching experience is preferred.
Locations: Charles Jordan, East Portland, Matt Dishman, Montavilla, Peninsula, St. Johns, Southwest and Woodstock Community Centers and Beaumont, Lane, and Mt, Tabor SUN Community Schools.
