We expect to fill three vacancies; however, additional positions may be filled from this announcement if they become available. Responsibilities These positions serve as temporary seasonal Range Technicians for the Green River District and the West Desert District. Identifying range improvement needs. Planning and conducting allotment inspections. Under the direction of a higher level technician or specialist, safely mixing, maintaining, and calibrating herbicides and pesticides for use in rangeland environments. Ensuring grazing permit and lease stipulations are complied with. Under the direction of a higher level technician or specialist, performing routine and recurring weed management activities in accordance with all applicable plans, agreements, and regulations. Assisting with updating case files and automated documents. Operating, maintaining, and inventorying weed management equipment (tools, monitoring/mapping equipment, pesticide applicators, etc.). Working with permitees/lessees on project maintenance and conditions. Under the direction of a higher-level technician or specialist, working with cooperators to complete weed projects with user groups, recreationists, volunteers, etc. Conducing range studies for condition and trend, utilization, actual use, climatology and other information used for allotment evaluations. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the qualification requirements - please be sure to include this information in your resume. To qualify at the GS-05 level you must meet the following: Specialized Experience: Applicants must possess one (1) year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-04 level comparable in difficulty and complexity to perform the duties of a Range Technician. Qualifying specialized experience includes: conducting inventories of livestock within a grazing area; collecting, compiling, and/or recording vegetation data on range inventories; performing routine and recurring weed management activities; and making observations of range conditions and wildlife use. OR Training: Completion of appropriate training such as in-service training programs, training acquired while serving in the Armed Forces, and government-sponsored developmental training programs applicable to Range will be allowed credit on a month-for-month basis. Completion of an intensive, specialized course of study of less than l year may meet in full the experience requirements. Courses of this type normally require completion of up to 40 hours per week of instruction rather than the usual 20 hours per week and are usually of at least 3 months duration. Such courses may have been obtained through a variety of programs such as those offered by technical schools and military training programs. To be creditable, such a course must have been designed specifically as career preparation for work related to Range Management, and must have provided you with the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to do the work. OR Education: To qualify based on education you must have four (4) years (120 semester hours) of education above high school, leading to a bachelor's degree with (a) with a major forestry, range management, agriculture or a subject-matter field directly related to the position or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of the following courses: forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources, outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering or wildland fire science. No more than 6 semester hours in mathematics is creditable. OR Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate undergraduate education. To qualify at the GS-06 level you must meet the following: Specialized Experience: Applicants must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 level comparable in difficulty and complexity to perform the duties of a Range Technician. Qualifying specialized experience includes: performing maintenance for range improvements; assisting in enforcement of range rules and regulations; and assisting in locating conservation and range improvement projects. OR Education: To qualify based on education you must have completed one full year (18 semester hours) of graduate education directly related to the work of the position. OR Combination of Specialized Experience and Education: Applicants may also use an equivalent combination of the type and level of experience and education described above. Transcripts must be provided with your application packet. To qualify at the GS-07 level you must meet the following: Applicants must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-06 level comparable in difficulty and complexity to perform the duties of a Range Technician. Qualifying specialized experience includes: assisting in the management of public range resources of a district or other specified area by observing and reporting special conditions regarding them; and performing the detailed work necessary to complete specific plans for development of an area for proper range management and conservation; OR Education: To qualify based on education you must have completed one full year (18 semester hours) of graduate education directly related to the work of the position. OR Combination of Specialized Experience and Education: Applicants may also use an equivalent combination of the type and level of experience and education described above. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement. Physical Demands: The work ranges from sedentary when completing duties in the office to frequent field work requiring a considerable amount of walking, riding, stooping, bending, and lifting. Work Environment: Office work is performed in adequately lighted, heated, and air-conditioned offices. Much of the time is spent in the field where exposure to extremes of heat and cold, rough terrain, insects, snakes, and other hazards are common. The incumbent carefully adheres to all safety procedures to mitigate hazards encountered. Education Applicants may qualify for these positions based on experience, education, or an equivalent combination as described in the Qualifications section of this announcement. Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. One full year of graduate education meets the requirements for GS-7.
