QC Lab Day Analyst – Decatur Corn Plant
Decatur Corn Processing – Decatur, IL
This is a hourly level position
Monday-Friday, 6:00am - 2:00pm
Under limited supervision, conducts in-process and finished product testing on dry and liquid products to determine adherence to established specifications for quality and purity. Maintains calibration on laboratory equipment and instrumentation. Works directly with operations and management to achieve a high level of product quality, which may prompt non-routine projects and tasks. Oversees adherence to periodic analysis requirements by ensuring samples are analyzed/submitted for analysis, collecting data and trending data. Works primarily a day shift or day rotating position but will provide overtime coverage as needed, including shift/aisle coverage.
Essential Job Functions:Cross-trained in laboratory functions of all areas, including shift, sensory, and microbiological sampling. Has demonstrated proficiency in all areas and/or has completed training programs for all applicable lab areas.Documents and analyzes results of all testing procedures and promptly notifies supervision and processing departments of any necessary adjustments to operating parameters. Maintains records of special testing, inputs data into applicable computer systems in a timely manner and clearly communicates any specification deviations.Monitors Reports and provides immediate notification to Management regarding deviations from established parameters.Recommends solutions to correct deficiencies or improve work and operational practices.Able to modify, create, or develop new procedures based on valid reference methodology. Assists with the writing and revising of laboratory SOP’s.Maintains a neat and clean working area at all times. Maintains clean equipment, returns equipment to storage areas when not in use, promptly cleans up spills.Demonstrates and maintains sufficient training on equipment and procedures normally performed by shift technicians to the point that all required routine work may be completed. Assists with daily, non-scheduled, assignments as needed.Demonstrates an understanding of the production processes and willingly makes recommendations to operators and Management in order to achieve product quality.Maintains an effective working relationship with co-workers and Management.Responsible for assisting shift technicians with the analytical testing, approval for product release, and the generation of Certificates of Analysis for all applicable loaded finished products, if needed.Shares responsibility with Management for daily approval of finished product rail available for shipment. Notifies Management with regard to product quality issues prior to approval of product for shipment.Maintains samples of tested product in order to confirm test results and accuracy when necessary.Maintains adequate supplies used for testing procedures and notifies supervision of the need to re-order such supplies in a timely manner.Monitors Hazardous Waste Levels and labels Hazardous Waste Containers when new empty containers arrive.Continually compares equipment readouts with samples of standards as required to insure that all systems are operating accurately.Participates actively in safety programs.Understands that accidents are preventable and that safety is everyone’s responsibility.Familiarizes themselves with the hazards in their work area and how to protect themselves.Education/Training/Experience:Associate’s degree or Bachelor’s degree preferred in a science related fieldPrevious laboratory experience requiredGood attendance history and work record.Excellent safety record and awarenessDemonstrates sufficient computer skills to utilize lab instrument operation programsExperience with lab documentation, procedures and equipment operation including minor equipment repairs and maintenanceDemonstrates sufficient math skills to perform calculations associated with lab testingPrevious plant experience preferred.Special Skills:Ability to work on multiple tasks while maintaining accuracy and focus.Ability to identify product trends or to trend large amounts of dataAbility to team build including training and mentoring of other lab staff.Good organizational skillsWillingness to assume and learn new responsibilitiesExcellent communication skillsDemonstrated troubleshooting skillsProven housekeeping and sanitation skills (MSS)Willingness to work overtime when necessaryAccurate record keeping skillsCertifications & Licenses Required:NoneWorking Conditions:DustChemicals / IrritantsThe scope of the position may require exposure to and use of chemicals, solvents, and cleaners that may be hazardous and/or cause injury if specific instructions regarding their mixture, use, and disposal/storage are not properly followed.Inside areas:Spring / Summer: Temperatures in some areas of the facility will be up to or exceed 100 degreesFall / Winter: Temperatures in the facility may be at or below freezing.Outside areas:Spring / Summer: Outside temperature may be up to or exceed 100 degrees with potential for high humidity. May be exposed to inclement weather conditions including, but not limited to, rain and wind.Fall / Winter: Outside temperatures may reach freezing or below. May be exposed to inclement weather including, freezing rain, sleet, snow and wind.Some manufacturing processes within the facility are highly reliant on machinery and other processing equipment and, as a result, noise levels may reach or exceed 85 decibels and require use of hearing protection for most of the work shift.Physical Requirements:Able to lift and transport materials and equipment weighing up to 30 pounds on an occasional basis and up to 50 pounds on an occasional basis.Lifting or carrying of weights over 50 lbs. is rare. Employees are encouraged to request assistance in lifting or carrying objects that weigh more than 50 lbs.Able to traverse up to two (2) miles during the course of a work day.Able to move about or to a work site by stooping, bending, kneeling or squatting frequently during the course of a work day. May require periods of prolonged sitting or standing.
