Job Details
POSITION PURPOSE
+ Pulmonary Function Technologist performs lung function procedures for patients with respiratory conditions. Their expertise is performing tests to help the Provider to diagnose, treat, and manage respiratory diseases and evaluate lung function. Tests consist of spirometry, body plethysmography/lung volumes, diffusion capacity measurements, 6-minute walk tests, and overnight pulse oximetry tests, which provide information for Providers to make informed decisions about patient care.

EDUCATION REQUIRED
+ Associate degree in: Respiratory Care.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
+ 1 year minimum experience as Respiratory Therapist.
+ Preferred one year’s experience working in Pulmonary Function Lab.
LICENSES / CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED
+ Graduate of a Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC) accredited program of Respiratory Care.
+ Licensure to be eligible to practice as a Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) in the State of Wisconsin.
+ Certified and/or Registered Respiratory Therapist (CRT, RRT) credentialing from the National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC)
+ Preferred certified and/or Registered Pulmonary Function Technologist (CPFT, RPFT) credentialing through the NBRC.
+ Current BLS certification from the American Heart Association or successful achievement of certification within 6 weeks of hire.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED
+ Ability to read, write, hear, speak, and comprehend the English language.
+ Ability to work independently and excellent problem-solving skills.
+ Effective time management and organizational skills.
+ Excellent verbal, written, and computer skills.
+ Observing patients during tests for any signs of discomfort or distress and taking appropriate actions.
+ Continuing education with the latest pulmonary testing techniques and technologies of American Thoracic Standards (ATS) and European Respiratory Society (ERS).
PRINCIPLE ACCOUNTABILITIES AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES
+ Calibrate, set up, troubleshoot, and maintain pulmonary function diagnostic equipment to ensure accuracy and reliability of testing.
+ Collect biological control data required for Quality Control (QC) purposes, monthly.
+ Obtain patient medical history and accurate documenting of test results for Provider review within patients’ Electronic Health Record (EHR).
+ Ability to clearly explain procedure of pulmonary function test to patients, build a rapport, and manage anxieties.
+ Conduct pulmonary function tests (PFTs) on patients to measure lung volume, capacity, rates of flow, and gas exchange to American Thoracic standards (ATS) and European Respiratory Society (ERS).
+ Perform six-minute walk tests, with the ability to operate and move oxygen “E” cylinders in a cart and replace as needed.
+ Collect Arterial Blood Gases (ABGs) via puncture to artery with heparinized needle, prepare and maintain integrity of sample to be sent to lab for resulting, and identify results with abnormal values.
+ Administer aerosol therapies with nebulizer using medical air or oxygen via “E” cylinder.
+ Analyze and interpret preliminary test data for Providers to diagnose respiratory conditions.
+ Clearly educate patients on the operation of overnight pulse oximetry equipment for testing, download data obtained, print, and send to be resulted by Pulmonologist.
+ Schedule yearly performance maintenance (PM) with Pulmonary Function equipment company.
+ Maintain, order supplies and medications for Lab.
