Job Summary:Entry level Public Safety opportunities available for service minded individuals interested in facilitating a safe and secure environment for the students, faculty, and staff who live, learn and work at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
The Public Safety Officer I is responsible for the detection and prevention of crime, for the protection of persons, property and the general maintenance of peace, order and security; duties include patrol, crowd control, traffic control and dispatching.
Minimum Qualifications:
Candidates will have, at least a some college credits after having completed high school or GED. College requirement not necessary for those with qualifying military service Must possess and maintain a valid US driver’s license Must have the ability to obtain and maintain a NYS Security Guard License CPR and AED certification must be completed within three months of hire All Public Safety Officer I incumbents must successfully complete Rensselaer's Field Officer Training Program within four (4) months of hireMust be available for flexible shift scheduling
Note: Five (5) years of safety, security, law enforcement experience or other related experience may be substituted for college credits
Relevant combinations of education, training and experience may be considered.
Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Demonstrated ability to apply critical thinking skills Must possess the ability to assess a situation and apply appropriate conflict resolution techniques Ability to use crisis intervention techniques Ability to use relevant personal and/or mobile computing technology Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills Requires ability to handle multiple emergency situations Requires excellent customer relations skills and the ability to deal effectively with a diverse population in an academic settingPreferred Knowledge, Skill, and Abilities

Shift
Public Safety: Various Shifts. All members of the Department of Public Safety must be available for flexible shift scheduling Including:
3rd shift 11:00 PM - 7:00 AM
2nd Shift 3:00 PM - 11:00 PM
1st Shift 7:00 AM - 3:00 PM
Travel
Local travel between campus locations onlyDriving
Driving a Rensselaer vehicle for non-passenger use
Salary Range/Rate
Expected hiring range:
Public Safety Officer I $20.25 Public Safety Officer II $22.55 Qualifications for Public Safety Officer II include: Officer II may require a higher educational standard, specialized certifications, or additional years of experience. At least five (5) years of combined safety, security, law enforcement, or related experience, which can substitute for college credits. Prior supervisory or leadership experience in a safety or security setting preferred. Advanced certifications in security or law enforcement practices.Pay transparency disclosure: The selected candidate’s salary will be determined based on factors that include the available budget, internal equity, and the final candidate’s qualifications, experience, education and other job-related credentials. This hiring range is provided as Rensselaer’s good faith estimate of the expected hiring range at the time of posting.
