**I.** **GENERAL SUMMARY** **:**
Under general supervision of the shift supervisor, this position performs all duties and responsibilities related to the day to day protection and security of hospital assets and information as well as the safety of all persons on hospital property. This position could have additional responsibilities assigned at the direction of department leadership.
**PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS** **:**
+ Performs basic public safety and security duties such as conducting internal and external patrols of all facilities and grounds, responding to and reporting on both routine and emergency calls for service, restraining violent patients and/or visitors; monitors assigned area for suspicious activity, prepares and completes incident reports and ensures accuracy; screens vendors and visitors entering the facility, ensuring compliance with established procedures.
+ Identifies and resolves problems, issues, concerns, or conflicts requiring resolution in an impartial manner by obtaining all necessary facts. Enlists the support of a supervisor or assistance from fellow Public Safety Officers when warranted.
+ Provides excellent customer service by assisting and interacting with patients, visitors, and other Medical Center staff in a manner that conveys the highest level of dignity, respect, courtesy, and professionalism. Maintains composure under stressful circumstances. Strives to de-escalate situations when confronted with uncooperative or belligerent individuals.
+ This position may require assisting senior officers in the performance of one or more of the following additional duties:
+ Community Outreach assignments, such as Loss & Crime Prevention, Community Policing
+ Support assignments, such as functioning as a backup/relief dispatcher, Lost and Found/Property Custodian, Department Equipment/Vehicle Custodian.
+ Actively participates and coordinates investigations, conducts interviews, reviews recorded video, prepares case files, catalogs and secures evidence as required.
+ Assists with all emergencies and disasters that may affect the Medical Center, including: crowd control; evacuations and other responsibilities as directed by supervisors.
+ Maintains collaborative, team relationships with peers and colleagues in order to effectively contribute to the working group’s achievement of goals, as well as to help foster a positive work environment
+ Performs other similar and related duties as required or directed.
**III. JOB REQUIREMENTS:**
JOB KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
+ Must successfully complete all training requirements and courses established and/or provided by the department.
+ Ability to multi-task and meet established deadlines.
+ Ability to assess potentially dangerous situations quickly, make sound decisions, and take appropriate action based on the information available.
+ Physically able to perform the duties and responsibilities outlined above.
+ Physically able to stand and/or walk for extended periods of time, able to work odd and irregular hours, (Saturdays, Sundays, holidays, overnights).
+ Must show emotional maturity, dependability, punctuality, diplomacy and tact with poise and self- confidence, devoid of negative remarks.
+ Must be trustworthy, helpful, friendly, courteous and disciplined
+ Must possess a valid driver’s license
+ Is able to favorably complete Federally mandated criminal background checks
+ Is eligible to obtain appointment as a special police officer in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts under MGL c.22C Section 63 or as a Boston Special Officer under BPD Rule 400.
**EDUCATION:**
+ High school diploma or GED equivalent required, associate’s degree preferred.
+ Ability to read and write at a proficient level.
+ Basic Computer Skills required
**EXPERIENCE:**
+ Prior military, security or police experience a plus
**OTHER:**
+ Possesses a valid driver’s license
**An equivalent combination of education and experience, which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed above, may be substituted for the above education and experience requirements.**
**V.** **WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS** **:**
+ Some exposure to the elements during regular rounds.
+ Ability to work long, irregular, and odd hours required. Position may also require unanticipated overtime and hold overs to maintain minimum staffing levels from time to time.
+ Possibility of injury due to eviction of unauthorized persons, restraint of violent patients, etc.
+ Exposure to various areas containing hazardous material and radioactive substances when performing patrols.
+ Frequent contact with patients, visitors, and employees.
