Position: Public Safety Dispatcher

Location: Elmhurst Hospital

Full Time

Hours: Evening Shift from 2:00pm - 10:30pm daily (including weekends - will have two consecutive weekdays off)


Job Summary: The Public Safety Dispatcher is a critical position responsible for ensuring the efficient and effective communication and coordination of security and emergency response activities within our healthcare facility. This role plays a vital part in maintaining a safe and secure environment for patients, visitors, and staff.

What you will do:

Receiving and prioritizing emergency and non-emergency calls, including requests for assistance, incidents, and alarms.

Dispatching Public Safety Officers and other emergency services as needed.

Monitoring multiple communication channels and responding promptly to all requests for assistance.

Maintaining clear and accurate communication with Public Safety Officers, hospital staff, and external emergency responders.

Relaying important information, updates, and instructions to appropriate parties during emergencies or incidents.

Tracking and managing the deployment of security personnel and resources to ensure adequate coverage of the hospital premises.

Maintaining real-time awareness of the location and status of all Public Safety Officers on duty.

Recording and maintaining detailed logs of all incoming calls, incidents, and dispatch activities.

Ensuring accurate and thorough documentation of incident reports and related information.

Assisting in the implementation of emergency response plans and procedures during critical incidents.

Providing guidance to staff and visitors regarding emergency evacuation procedures when necessary.

Operating and monitoring communication equipment, including two-way radios, telephones, and computer-aided dispatch systems.

Performing routine checks and maintenance of communication equipment.

Providing training and support to new Public Safety Dispatchers as needed.

Staying current with emergency dispatch protocols and procedures.

What you will need:

High School Diploma or GED

Minimum one year experience as a telephone operator or equivalent.

To be at least 21 yrs of age by date of hire.

Able to type at least 40 wpm.

Valid State of Illinois Drivers License

This position requires attaining and maintaining certification from the Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials International (APCO); specifically, APCO’s Public Safety Telecommunicator 1 certification, sixth edition within (12) months of employment.
