The main purpose of this position/job is to:

Psychiatric Nurse provides care and support for patients with mental health challenges. It is part of his/her duties to evaluate the needs of the patients as well as to administer treatments and therapies. Psychiatric Nurses should also be knowledgeable in providing efficient patient care, diagnosis, support, and treatment of patients, including the prescribing of medicines, within her/his scope of professional nursing practice and pre-defined protocols.

Brief Description

Key responsibilities include the following:


Carry out holistic health assessments, determine diagnosis; provide treatment and care on patients for a variety of health problems (Psychiatric & PHC consultations). These patients being students, and staff on emergency basis.Perform clinical assessments and develop a treatment plan that is appropriate for each patient. Respond to distressed patients in a non-threatening manner and try to understand the source of the problem, including the building and sustaining of patient-nurse relationship.To educate patients, fellow colleagues, Res. coordinators and student leaders about mental illness, treatment, and prevention.Track patient progress and report their results to the psychiatrists and psychologists. This includes working with other medical professionals to evaluate or change treatment plans.To provide care, professional opinion and referral of students seeking concessions in academic examinations.Refer both PHC and Psychiatric patients to a Unit within the University or a hospital for further management when necessary.To prescribe, dispense and record all medicines according to existing protocols up to S4 in accordance with the Medicines and Related Substances Act 101 of 1965 as amended, and the General Regulation thereof; and, to assist in the smooth functioning of the dispensary through stock rotation and the efficient pharmaceutical stock management. To assist on emergency calls brought to Campus Health & Wellness Centre.To plan and carry out health promotion campaigns in collaboration with stakeholders according to the Health Calendar. Maintain accurate record-keeping of all activities, including compilation of daily statistics.Will be expected to attend the Unit meetings and other external ones as delegated.Perform any other tasks/activities which fall within the general functioning of the Unit as specified and delegated by the HoD.

Required Academic Qualification/s, competences, and experience.


Matric Certificate.Four Year Diploma/Degree in Nursing Science (General, Psychiatry, Community and Midwifery).Experience in Psychiatric Nursing (minimum of 2 years).A qualification or experience in Clinical Nursing Science, Health Assessment, Treatment and Care (PHC).Medicine Dispensing Practitioner s certificate.Experience as a Professional Nurse (minimum of 5 years).Experience in youth healthcare settings (minimum of 2 years). Current Registration with the South African Nursing Council.Must have excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills.Must be flexible and be prepared to work at various Campuses.Computer literacy is essential.Must have a valid driver s license.
