About our Department:

Clinton/Health Alliance Hospital, in partnership with the Department of Psychiatry at UMass Memorial Health Care, is seeking a full-time, board-certified/board-eligible Geriatric Psychiatrist to serve as Medical Director of its 20-bed Geriatric Psychiatry Unit (GPU), located on the Clinton campus. This position offers the opportunity to provide clinical, administrative, and managerial oversight while working collaboratively with a dedicated multidisciplinary team to deliver exceptional care to older adults with complex psychiatric and medical needs.

Alternate: Case Load Variety. Teaching. And More

The Medical Director will oversee clinical operations of the GPU, focusing on medication management, medical oversight, and comprehensive patient care. Responsibilities include maintaining a daily caseload, conducting psychiatric evaluations, managing treatment plans, participating in daily treatment team meetings, collaborating on discharge planning, and facilitating family communication as needed. Additionally, the Medical Director will provide leadership and mentorship to the unit’s staff, which includes nurses, social workers, and a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner. The role also involves representing the GPU at hospital committees and Medical Staff Quality Assurance meetings, as well as leading performance improvement initiatives to ensure compliance with regulatory standards such as those set by the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health (MA DMH) and The Joint Commission.

The Geriatric Psychiatry Unit is a locked, acute care unit that has a long-standing reputation for excellence in serving older adults with significant mental illness and co-morbid medical conditions. The GPU is also a teaching site for UMass Psychiatry residents, fostering an academic environment that prioritizes education, innovation, and compassionate care. Overnight and weekend coverage for the unit is provided by additional psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse practitioners.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will be a board-certified or board-eligible Geriatric Psychiatrist with strong clinical expertise and academic credentials, as well as demonstrated administrative and leadership skills. Familiarity with quality assurance measures and regulatory compliance is essential. The Medical Director must be committed to delivering exceptional patient care while fostering a collaborative and supportive environment for team members.

The chosen candidate will receive a competitive compensation and benefits package and the opportunity for an academic appointment at UMass Medical School, tailored to their education and experience. Additional opportunities include mentoring psychiatry residents, teaching medical students, and pursuing academic initiatives within the Department of Psychiatry.
