Position Summary
Reporting to the Executive Vice-President, Major Projects, the Project Manager will direct and exercise functional authority over all aspects of construction projects, including planning, organization, the budgeting process, and cost reporting. The Project Manager will ensure that the objectives of each project are achieved on time, on budget, and that quality and safety standards are met. They will also coordinate staff to successfully achieve goals and objectives.
Responsible for managing the profitability and loss of the assigned project. Oversees the activities of all direct reporting entities, including the Safety Manager/Engineer, Quality Manager/Engineer, Engineering Manager, Construction Manager/Superintendent, Contract Manager, and Account Controller. Ensures the efficient and compliant management and coordination of engineering, planning, procurement, materials control, construction, and system/start-up testing. Establish and maintain a competent resource in each area/department listed above to meet the requirements of the contract. Assists in the preparation, evaluation, modification and, finally, assumes responsibility for the completion cost estimates established for each phase of the work. Ensures an effective business relationship with the customer and all levels of subcontractors and suppliers. Maintain effective discipline and good staff morale. Verifies estimates based on a detailed evaluation of the service offering specifications. Represent PNR RailWorks or associated joint ventures, including in the preparation and presentation of reports to the Executive Committee and third parties. Provide written correspondence with customers, designers, partners, subcontractors, suppliers, and other parties as necessary. Hiring and managing staff. Labour planning and compliance (including unions). Administer financial tracking systems to monitor project costs and estimates. Perform other related duties as required. Skills and qualifications required Undergraduate degree or a degree in a related field of study such as civil engineering, construction management, or project management are highly prioritized. Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience in a major heavy civil project environment. In-depth knowledge of construction industry practices, methods, processes and standards and their impact on project activities. – move to experience required section Professional designations such as an engineer or project management professional are considered an asset, but are not required. Demonstrated experience in applying knowledge of project accounting, project controls (cost, schedule, change management, etc.), materials management, contract management, subcontract management, safety and quality. Successful experience in planning and executing major projects on time and on budget Ability to apply, interpret and understand regulations and contracts. Clear understanding of the mechanics of alternative project delivery models, risks and interface management. Proficiency in commercial and common construction applications such as Microsoft Office products, Hard Dollar or JD Edwards software. Demonstrated leadership qualities and abilities; applies innovative and effective management techniques to maximize employee performance. Effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to make presentations. Strong customer relationship management skills, skills to influence and organize.
Physical demands and working conditions
Full-time position. Work primarily from the project office, which involves significant overnight travel (primarily in Eastern Canada), with occasional work from home when possible and consistent with the work deliverables (subject to managerial authorization). Work possible in and near live tracks (trains).
