Position Overview

The primary purpose of the project engineer is to develop, lead, and execute capital and expense projects in a manner that follows all McCormick process and technical standards. 

 Key Responsibilities 

Provide packaging equipment engineering expertise for project design, construction, commissioning, and start-up as part of multi-functional teams for large capital projects. Supporting projects ranging from $100k to $40M. Provide project management in addition to engineering discipline support for small to medium capital projects. Apply McCormick engineering principles and Early Management tools to enhance the capability of packaging systems across the HVP plant. Act as a subject-matter expert within engineering discipline- Packaging Equipment/Systems Build relationships with third party vendors to deliver packaging equipment solutions.

Engineer Responsibilities

The project engineer is responsible for all aspects of approved project execution, including detail technical design, issuing technical specifications, managing vendors, contract engineers, and contractors for construction, remodeling, and equipment fabrication and installation. The Project Engineer is responsible for system commissioning and ramp up as well as transition to operations maintenance including documentation, training, spare parts, and conducting post project review to measure results and document learnings. Project Engineer will be responsible for project budget management including estimate development, managing spending appropriately between capital and expense, cash flow projection, and cash flow reporting. Conduct design reviews with equipment suppliers and internal project team and stakeholders. Provide technical expertise for improvement activities and facilitate dedication to prevention of defects and comprehensive continuous improvement.  Provide technical expertise and assist troubleshooting for daily operations per the plant issue escalation process. 

Project Management Responsibilities for Small to Medium Projects   < $5M

Develop technical proposals (solutions and options) to meet customer needs including detailed technical scopes of work, corresponding estimates, and schedules necessary to submit capital funding requests. Work with others on the development of financial justification and business case documentation for project submittals and influence the approval process. Work with McCormick stakeholders and maintain full engagement by providing regular status updates and other communication as necessary. This will include stakeholders internal to the plant as well as external (i.e. sales, marketing, corporate QA, packaging engineering, North American Engineering, and corporate safety). The Project Engineer will have responsibility for multiple projects simultaneously.

 

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering Minimum 5 years’ of engineering experience in a manufacturing environment.  Can be a combination of various engineering disciplines, e.g. Process Engineering, Project Engineering. At least 2-3 years of direct Project Engineering experience. Experience in the process industry (wet/dry). Requires the understanding of project justification financial process (i.e. Return on Investment, Internal Rate of Return, and Life Cycle Cost/Benefit Analysis). Demonstrated leadership, planning, organizing and communication skills. Experience managing multiple projects from the evaluation through implementation stages. Experience developing justification, scope, and management of capital projects to budget and schedule. Experience assembling equipment bid specifications for unit op replacement or new equipment additions. Contractor management experience, including scoping the work, managing a bidding process, negotiations, field installation supervision, and change order management. Experience leading small project teams. Ability to follow up and prioritize project issues independently and juggle multiple projects with minimal supervision. Demonstrated ability to identify, troubleshoot, and solve technical problems to root cause. Proficient in Excel, Power Point, MS Project, Word, AutoCAD Must have solid written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work weekends, varying shifts, holidays as project execution schedules may require. Travel will be approximately 10%, but may be higher during specific project phases (i.e. FAT)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Project engineering experience in the food processing, pharmaceutical, or other regulated CPG environment. Knowledge of control systems for process equipment/systems and understanding of integration requirements. Experience performing flow calculations, pump & pipe sizing, instrumentation specifications, and reading/originating P&ID’s. Experience working with dry/wet material handling design to optimize equipment performance and equipment specifications. Experience with dry and liquid processing and facilities equipment: Process Systems Silos, tanks, hoppers Sterilization Milling equipment/systems Airlocks/Rotary valves Pneumatic Conveying Auger/volumetric feeding of dry goods Vibratory feeder and screening systems Instrumentation, e.g. temperature, pressure, flow, etc. Pumps Heat Exchangers Extract and Pasteurization systems Material Handling systems, i.e. conveyors, cranes/hoists, lift/dump systems Facilities Equipment Air Compressors, Liquid Nitrogen distribution/dosing systems, HVAC, Boilers, Power Distribution systems, Security systems, etc. Knowledge of cGMP systems. Knowledge of machine safety systems and design requirements. Experience with dry and liquid processing, facilities, and packaging equipment. Knowledge and experience with plant operations, CAD systems and shop floor integration Experience with SAP or a similar ERP system. Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification A strong understanding of sanitary design concepts Experience with maintenance programs and processes. Experience with TPM Knowledge of preventative maintenance programs

Base Salary: $86,390 - $151,220

 

Base salary compensation will be determined based on factors such as geographic location, skills, education, experience for this role, and/or internal equity of our current employees as part of any final offer. This position is also eligible to participate in McCormick’s Incentive Bonus (MIB) Plan.
