Project Engineer – Southern Company Gas Support (Birmingham or Atlanta)
**Project Engineer – Southern Company Gas Support** **_Technical Shared Services (TSS), Project Engineering Department_** **WORK LOCATION, SCHEDULE, & TRAVEL** + This position will be based out of The Energy Center in _Birmingham, AL_ or the Southern Company Gas Corp HQ in _Atlanta, GA_ . + Hybrid work schedule (in-office, field and telecommute); currently three (3) days in-office or at a plant/field site and two (2) days telecommute (subject to adjustment). + This position will require a mix of both field and office work. + Field work can include site visits to various generating facilities, of existing fossil vendor facilities and may require overnight travel. + This position will require some travel (day and overnight, up to 50%) and the ability to work successfully in a remote/virtual environment with access to internet service. + Relocation assistance may be provided if the successful candidate does not currently live within a reasonable commute distance. **POSITION SUMMARY** A Project Engineer acts as the engineering manager for design and procurement activities for a variety of projects throughout Southern Company. Projects include large capital and maintenance (retrofits), in the areas of existing fossil generation, environmental, new electric utility power generation including gas and renewables, control systems, gas, and electric utility transmission systems. This role is responsible for managing the engineering scope, engineering budgets, engineering schedules, and serves as the main point of contact for engineering deliverables to the project manager. The Project Engineer also works with design disciplines to ensure adequate and qualified resources are assigned to the project, anticipating changes in project scope, budget, and schedule requirements, and developing/communicating mitigation plans for those changes. They also identify and communicate lessons learned and facilitate resolving engineering and vendor related issues. This position is also required to maintain accurate project records in a variety of project management applications This Project Engineer position will be filled at a Level 6 or 7, based on the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate. **POSITION QUALIFICATIONS** **_Education/Certification:_** + B.S. in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution is required. + Project Management Professional (PMP) or Professional Engineer (PE) certification is a plus. **_Technical & Leadership Experience:_** + 5+ years’ combined experience in any of the following areas is required: + Design or project management as related to engineering, procurement, construction, and startup for LNG, Gas Storage Facilities, Gas Compressor Stations, heavy industrial projects, or electric utility generation + Formal or informal experience in a lead type role (i.e. directing activities of direct reports or project team members) + Experience working in (or in direct support of) at least one of the following areas is required: + LNG, gas storage or gas compression + Plant facility operations (Pulp and Paper, Chemical, Oil, etc.) + Electric utility generation systems + Budget/schedule management + Understanding of project change control + Strong risk mitigation and analytical skills to evaluate progress, identify problem areas, evaluate alternatives, and determine viable solutions **_Knowledge, Skills & Abilities_** + Knowledge of engineering, procurement, and construction processes. + Must possess strong management and organization skills. + Ability to build a strong, diverse team. + The incumbent must possess the skills to balance customer satisfaction priorities with those deriving from project restraints. + Ability to work successfully and build relationships across operating companies. **ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE** + Performs project engineering assignments involved in the design and construction of, natural gas processing and storage facilities, liquified natural gas (LNG) plant facilities and compressor stations. + Works independently with little direct supervision to advance projects to successful completion. + Develops statement of work documents to secure and manage engineering and construction service providers, inspectors, and other technical resources that may be needed to develop the project. Manages outside engineering and construction services to ensure project goals are met. + Develops contract documents and purchase requisitions for procurement of materials/equipment. + Participates in procurement process to identify acceptable vendors and contractors. Evaluates bids and coordinates with other departments to ensure consistency with corporate standards. + Demonstrates proficiency in applying codes and standards to perform natural gas engineering, plant construction and operation. + Maintains working knowledge of relevant technologies and best practices. Ensures engineering standards, methods and practices are in regulatory compliance. + Supports the development of design options or recommendations to improve system optimization.
