Project DCS Control System Specialist

Job Summary

The Marathon Carson California Refinery has an opening for an Project DCS Control System Specialist. This position will contribute to the Major Projects Group and refinery’s visions in the areas of safety, reliability, and profitability defined by the department in accordance with its business needs. They will support Major Project Group and maintain relationship with various departments such as Process Control Group, Maintenance and Operations.

This position will identify and address varying levels of technical obsolescence in the refinery's basic process control systems (BPCSs), third-party programmable logic controllers (PLCs), and associated third-party devices as well as the fiber communication cabling, patch panels, and switches required to support the new BPCS equipment. This position will also support the standardization and migration of the legacy refinery control systems(TDC 2000/3000), instrumentation, and controls for fired and rotating equipment by moving toward a common and more modern Basic Process Control Systems (BPCS) and safety instrumented systems (SIS).

The schedule for the position is 9/80, after hours calls can occur several times a month and this position supports construction and TAR 1-2 times a year on average.

Key Responsibilities

Define scope for migrating obsolescence legacy BPCS systems by providing guidance to project with the infrastructure needs (consoles, servers, switches, fiber and routing, etc.).

Determine the necessary hardware and infrastructure needed such as controllers (C300, UPC, etc. to support project I/O needs.

Support Operation's Reps to ensure and provide alignment and consistency with the operational requirements as it relates to the decision-making process to achieve the Lines of Progression requirements.

Assist with the scheduling of operator Experion training on the new systems.

Assist with proving assimilation station and equipment to support the Operator training.

Help develop the Functional Design Spec (FDS) as necessary.

Review, comment and approve BlueBeam documents developed by the project team as necessary.

Participate in various project meetings such as P&ID reviews, risk registers, VIP workshops, BlueBeam reviews, etc.)

Participate in HFATs, CFATs and SATs and job-walks as required.

Participate in Alarm Rationalization reviews as required.

Support engineering and Integration contractors by providing necessary information as necessary. This includes gathering and capturing of the existing databases including legacy platform to help develop scope and reverse engineering process.

Develop or provide standards, guidelines, and specs to guide projects on controls, database, HMI displays and hardware installation as needed.

Support the project by helping define and design the new system. This includes CM control strategies and modifying the existing databases as needed. This also includes configuring Experion History assignments, Display groups, HMI Displays, STB files, STN files, Safeview, Menu Navigation, etc.

Define the requirements to support the project needs and design with the necessary LCN network configuration file changes (NCF). Help and support executing the NCF changes.

Define the requirement and perform the necessary modifications to the legacy database such as Network infrastructure (i.e., UCN/HWY) and as these systems are migrated to the new systems.

Develop the Console Cutover Strategy Plan (swim lanes, step-by-step procedures, etc.) and the potential necessary changes to the existing LCN Consoles during the cutover.

Support and perform Experion EMDB modifications as necessary. This includes modifying, deleting or adding new assets, alarm groups, etc.

Perform Experion System Configuration modifications as necessary. This includes making changes when adding, deleting, or modifying hardware on the network. This may also include the following: OPCI, System Wide Settings, Alarm Configuration and Appearance, Hardware and Operator Security (asset rights – scope of responsibility).

Support the install and migrations of the legacy LCN software releases (NCF Release upgrades) and Experion Releases (OPM) as they are required by the project.

Update the legacy documentation of control systems, drawings, administration policies and procedures as required. Includes the following: LCN network drawing, Control network drawings (FTE, UCN. HWY), Maintain TDC / DCS Administration policies and standards, Maintain security administration and policies of the DCS.

Perform yearly self-audits of MOC for DCS per DCS admin spec.

Update backup media and functions related to BPCS data recovery management plans. Includes the following: Fastloads, UserVolumes, ECs for Net-to-Net, History Module IDF EC and EBR.

Support management and storage of shipped and received materials as they relate to the project.

Assist and support the installation and commissioning of the new systems. This involves working closely with the migrations teams (Honeywell, EPC, etc.).

Work in close collaboration with the OT during the commissioning process when establishing accounts, privileges and network access and network connectivity.

Work in close collaboration with Honeywell when commissioning new systems.

Work in close collaboration with operations when commissioning the new consoles and turnover.

Support, assist and coordinate loop cutover activities (Hot and/or Cold).

Education, Experience and Skills

Minimum Qualifications

Must have Bachelor’s degree in Engineering and 4 years of Controls System experience OR Must have High School Diploma and 10 years of Controls System experience in refining, petro-chemical or other related heavy industry. (Education must be obtained prior to start date.)

Must be proficient in Microsoft: Word, Excel and Outlook

Must be able to wear appropriate PPE in the refinery, be able to physically perform all tasks in the field and take hair drug test and physical.

Must have a valid driver’s license. (MPC determines valid status.)

Must be able to obtain a TWIC Card.

Must be legally authorized to work in the US without the need for future VISA sponsorship.

Travel Requirement is 10% - 30% in order to support offsite hardware and software testing.

Preferred Qualifications

​7 years or more years of refinery industry experience in process automation, instrumentation, and controls (BPCS, PLC, SIS- Triconex/Safety Manager) is preferred.

​​HMI Design and Development is preferred.

Power Point is preferred.

​Honeywell DCS (TDC 2000, TDC3000, Experion) is preferred.

​Experience with Triconex (Tricon, Trident) is preferred.

​Experience with SIS and SIL rating safety systems is preferred.
