Program Manager, Young Writers Workshop

The Equity Center seeks a motivated Program Manager to lead the Young Writer’s Workshop (YWW) program. This position as the Program Manager will focus on critical engagement with youth through the arts, with a primary focus on, but not limited to, creative writing; the performing arts (dance, theatre, music), studio art (photography, painting, drawing), and digital media (graphic design, audio production) may also be included. Furthermore, the position will work to build on the decades of successful programming supported by the School of Education and Human Development to integrate YWW with existing youth programming at the Equity Center, specifically Starr Hill Pathways with a focus on creative youth development.

The Center for the Redress of Inequity Through Community-Engaged Scholarship (the “Equity Center”) is the University of Virginia’s collaborative multi-disciplinary center, established in August 2019. The Equity Center seeks to tangibly redress racial and socioeconomic inequality in university communities by advancing a transformative approach to universities’ fundamental research mission, which will in turn reform institutional values, pedagogy and operations. A key research-practice partnership of the Equity Center is its college and career readiness pipeline program for local youth called Starr Hill Pathways (SHP).

The Program Manager will join a team of passionate educators at the Equity Center and will require exceptional attention to detail, organizational skills, and the highest standards of integrity. The ideal candidate will coordinate closely with the School of Education and Human Development, the primary partner in this new project.  As such, a major goal will be the development of a pipeline of future educators who recognize the critical role of creativity and the arts in learning.  Coordination efforts will also include University staff and faculty, school systems, and local youth-serving organizations to ensure that community needs take priority in developing an existing program in the context of the Equity Center.

In collaboration with the Equity Center staff, the Program Manager will help guide communication and outreach efforts, the co-creation and implementation of programming, and coordination of partnerships. The intent of the position is to help knit existing community and university resources to provide robust college and career pathways support for local youth from marginalized communities with a focus on creative youth development and the cultivation of teaching and learning opportunities for program staff.

providing direct employee supervision, including the communication of clear expectations, and the training, coaching, constructive feedback and recognition appropriate to individual role performance;

tracking program evaluations and incorporating student and staff suggestions for improvement in the design of future programming;

managing outreach communications and promotional materials and ensuring the accuracy of the information in the program website, social media, and alumni newsletters;
