Product Development Engineer II

SUMMARY:

Engineering and development of fluid dispensing systems (dispensers and sprayers) from concept

to engineered product that is ready for commercial production in a fast-paced environment to achieve speed to market. Concepts may be developed based on internally defined or customer driven requirements, using new product ideas or modifications to existing products. Develop 3D models of high complexity that are both aesthetically accurate and technically robust using Solidworks CAD software.

Key functional team member leading projects through concept ideation, engineering development, and functional prototype units that pass the fit for use (FFU) criteria. Provide support to other innovation projects and other department teams (tooling, manufacturing, sales, marketing, etc.) to evaluate and recommend product changes to increase product performance or sales.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

With technical creativity, based on internal or external request, propose several technical solutions for a product/ability to create new concepts.Product development engineering of concepts into parts and assemblies for prototyping, analysis, and tooling design.  Coordinate development activities through stages 2 (Design) and 3 (Development) as defined by the Product Development Process. As project lead, ability to drive progress by providing leadership and clear communication with internal/cross functional teams and external customers as required in project meetings and discussions.Work with design, consumer insights, sales and marketing to ideate concepts and provide our customers with technical support on new product solutions.Provide reports and data necessary for evaluation/clarification, internal/external presentations, and cost analysis (part counts, tooling, assembly, and operations).Drive DFMEA and participate in other innovation project meetings to provide opinions and recommendations on product design concepts and problem-solving scenarios.Attend training to increase personal capabilities in CAD/CAE software use, new design technologies, and personal growth opportunities as available.Other duties may be assigned.Must follow all work rules and policies

             

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:  

Education level: Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) in Mechanical Engineering or Plastics Technology from a four-year college or university.Experience level: 2-5 years of experience in plastic dispensing systems for liquids; minimum 5 years experience in product development of multiple component plastic assemblies (e.g. consumer products, medical equipment, etc.).Hands-on daily use of Solidworks and experience with drafting techniques for creation, revision and checking.Experience in plastic injection molding part design and product development for high volume consumer products a plus. Experience and understanding of plant operations and manufacturing strategy in part design versus cost analysis.Experience in directly interfacing with external customer organizations for new product or package solutions a plus.Experience in reading, analyzing, and taking actions based on outputs from engineering analysis programs such as FEA, CFD and Moldflow on part design and assembly. It is a plus to have experience in operating the engineering analysis programs.   Experience in daily use of Microsoft Office software applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Project), and use of the internet for research and technology suppliers.Use of project management methods and tools.Ability to successfully manage multiple tasks and projects with great sense of urgency.Strong communication and collaboration skills. Lead technical meeting internally within Silgan Dispensing System and externally with customers.Willingness for occasional travel, including internationally depending on the project.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to read and interpret technical data and drawings pertinent to mechanical engineering and design.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio and percentage.

Ability to use engineering formulas for area, volume, force, pressure, etc. specifically related to physics, statics, dynamics and fluid mechanics.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to handle problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Decision-making and problem solving are based on cost, design requirements, manufacturing capabilities, and available tools. Marketing and our customer establish cost targets and design requirements. Many times, input is a vague outline of customer requirements that must be translated to detailed specifications and prints.

This job uses defined methodologies and test methods to evaluate predicted success of a design and development time (e.g. computerized models, finite element analysis, design of experiments, ASTM test methods, statistical analysis methods, etc.).

Our team uses Product Design and Development Procedures, which meet ISO new product development requirements that must be understood and followed.

This position works in a general office environment. The noise level in the work

environment is usually very quiet. Four to six trips per year for 1-3 days at a time may be required depending on the project. Travel may include international trips depending on the project.
