Your primary role will be to lead, evaluate, select, specify, and engineer certain processes, methodologies, or products for a project. You will perform various tasks, including but not limited to simulations, calculations, reports, and support fieldwork.

The projects that the Pipeline Hydraulics Process Engineer will be assigned to may have complex features that will require the application of good engineering knowledge, and both critical and creative thinking. The successful candidate should have experience in the areas of small to large pipelines and hydraulic piping networks, oil and gas (upstream, midstream, or downstream), energy transition, low-carbon initiatives, and/or industrial process design. The projects would comprise pre-feasibility studies, feasibility studies, FEED, and/or detailed design/ engineering phases of execution.

Your Key Responsibilities

The responsibilities will include engineering design activities for projects of various sizes and complexity. It will also include delegation to Junior Process Engineers as well as assistance and mentoring to the same and review of their deliverables. Peer and Cold-Eye Review of deliverables created by other Process Engineers may also be required.

Complete various tasks in a timely, thorough, and organized manner including but not limited to:

Development and review of steady-state and transient pipeline hydraulic analysis/ studies for new and existing installations while generating and documenting hydraulic analysis inputs, assumptions, limitations, results, and subsequent study reports. Development of process simulations using industry-standard software. Development of core Process Engineering drawings such as Heat and Material Balances (HMBs), Block Flow Diagrams (BFDs), Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs), and Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs). Contribute to the development of interdisciplinary documents such as Equipment and Instrumentation Datasheets, Line Designation Tables (LDTs), PSV Lists, cause and effect diagrams (shutdown keys, SDKs), Set Point Lists, Car Seal Lists, Process Design Basis and/or Criteria, Design Basis Memorandum (DBM), and Operating and Control Philosophies. Carry out process studies, analyses, provide recommendations for new and existing facilities and equipment. Execute adequacy checks, baselining, capacity rating, and debottlenecking. Process sizing calculations for safety elements (PSVs, rupture discs, and blowdown utilities), equipment, piping and pipelines, inline elements, and instrumentation. Support of interdisciplinary Operational Risk Assessments (ORAs), What-If, Hazard and Operability (HAZOP), Constructability Review, and Start-Up/Commissioning activities. Travel to the site, as required, to support data gathering, routing, and tie-in location confirmation. Collaborate with other Stantec peers both within the Process Engineering Team and other engineering departments, and project stakeholders to deliver quality products to Stantec clients. Additional experience with other comparable hydraulic software is considered an asset. Previous working experience with large (by length, size, and/or network complexity) pipelines and hydraulic systems and installations is preferred. Strong working knowledge of single and multiphase hydraulic fundamentals and line sizing practices is preferred. Previous experience with DNV Synergi’s Model Lab and AFT Fathom and Impulse’s Settling Slurry (SSL) will be an asset. Previous experience with non-Newtonian fluids and the various multiphase concepts (e.g., gas-liquid, gas-liquid-liquid, liquid-liquid, gas-solid, liquid-solid) will be an asset. Basic knowledge and experience with process simulation software (e.g., Aspen - HYSYS, Schlumberger Symmetry, PROMAX). Some knowledge and experience with the Aspen Flare Analyzer, Aspen Exchanger Design & Rating (EDR), and the HTRI Exchanger Suite will be an asset. Working knowledge of process engineering design for conventional oil & gas, gas plants and liquids handling facilities, Renewable Energy - carbon capture, Hydrogen, Oil Sands and SAGD facilities, or refineries.
